must...

- be short...ideally 14cm deep (so I can best fit a rx240 next to it)
- have long braided cables (so I can go behind the mobo and back round in a cm690ii)
- ideally 700w
- non modular

wants...

- as plain black as possible without led's (I'm going for an all black interior)
- <£70

Don't have that core edition but read a lot of reviews to decide on my PSU and the XFX brand are basically re-branded seasonic's, if that wasn't enough of an endorsement read some reviews and you will see they are a very stable, high quality PSU

I second the XFX 650. Very solid, reliable unit, excellent quality.

Just on that note tho, I felt the same way but having just installed my brand new xfx 750w xxx edition yday I'm currently thinking about an RMA for it

Making a very bad whine as soon as it's powering the mobo, not even when computer is running, so bad that it's like sitting in front of a pest repellent thingy and giving me a sore head

done few searches and there's threads all over about this but as usual with 'facts' from the net it's all to be taken with a pinch of salt

Just something to keep an eye (or ear :p) out for

thanks all.

In answer to what's it going to power, a i5 @ 4.6+, 1ssd, 1hdd, 1optical and a 6950 @ 6970 which my old tagan modular 580w handles fine. I will be adding a pump and a couple more mans. I am changign the PSU because the leads on the tagan are too short and also with the modular plugs it is too long to allow me to put a rad in the bottom of the cm690ii

Cables are bundled at the top in a non-modular, which strangely, can help if your rad is right up the PSU.

spot on. With a non modular I can quickly get the cables behind the mobo tray. With a modular you have bulky connectors that are spread out and can take up a good couple of cm.

That said, the CM690ii could have been designed a bit better. Slightly longer and more space for a full depth rad at the top and it would be an absolute stonker.

Coil whine can happen with any PSU and any system. Although the whine may be coming from the power supply it can be induced by other components such as the graphics card or motherboard.
I haven't noticed particularly bad coil whine on any of the systems I've configured with the XFX 750W (or 650/850 either) but as always it's luck of the draw.

Yeah this is indeed true and totally runs in line with my luck :)

Just out of curiosity tho captain, any of ur builds with the xfx psu include the Asus m5a99x evo mobo? Just incase that it's not the actual PSU but the combination if I get a replacement

I know the feeling. Every single one of my graphics cards (8800GT, 9800GTX+, GTX 280, two GTX 460s and a GTX 470) has had bad cap whine under F@H load, across different boards and PSUs.

They haven't, no, as we don't currently offer a system with that board.
It's unlikely to be a specific board model causing the issue, more likely to be the specific board or PSU in question - there have been certain cases when very specific combinations have caused issues, but these are very much the exception rather than the rule.

Could be just unlucky with the PSU after waiting 2 weeks on it lol

No issues with my old PSU so I'll go back to using it while I RMA the xfx and hope it's just the PSU and not the actual combination as you stated which would suck fat hairy coconuts, thx captain, I salute thee :)
