My WRT54GL has finally decided to stop functioning properly. So im in need of a new router.

What it needs;
Wireless N
Gigabit Ethernet ports (Preferably)
Be able to run Tomato firmware
Be able to handle lots of connections at once (something that the 54GL did well)

I was thinking of the WNR500L >> http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-136-NG

Any thoughts?

Many thanks.

I can't see them on OCUK. I had a quick google and they seem to retail for around £100. Are they better than the WNR3500?

If you want tomato, yes. There's not even a £10 difference between the two, they share the same cpu yes the asus has double the flask & ram (32/128MB) of the netgear plus detachable antennas. That's why RT-N16 i plaster all over every k26 tomato thread e.g. http://www.linksysinfo.org/forums/showthread.php?t=63587 .

The netgear will work but a. some people have had issues flashing it and b. cosidering the tiny difference in price it make sense to choose the one with better hardware specs (also asus recovery tool makes flashing esyer/idot proof).

Ahh nice one. I had heard of it before, how easy is it to flash? I hear it can hold a substantial amount of connections at once, far more than the 54GL? 1 last thing, would this be capable of the future 100meg virgin service? Currently on 20, but going to 50 soon hopefully and then eventually 100 :)

Nice, I have ordered one today. Will be here tomorrow! :) Got it for £100 inc delivery and insurance against me messing things up :)

I downloaded the correct version (I think) but am having some problems with port forwarding. I had a friend over today with his PC and it gave us both open nat as the 54GL did, but it would randomly decide that we couldnt connect to one another. It also randomly doesnt give great download, peaks at around 15meg apposed to 20. (I used to get 19.6/19.8 24/7) so I think it is more than a coincidence.

Can someone directly link me to the best/most stable version of tomato for the RT N16 please?

Depends what you mean by best. All k26 build are based off teddybears (currently build 52), which gets frequent updates http://tomatousb.org/changelog . K26 mipsr2 vpn (everything) or k26 mipsr2 etx (everything, but no vpn*) http://tomatousb.org/download .

Victeks RAF mod (direct link) is build 50 with the usual mac limiting/arp binding added.

*They all have vpn as standard now. Unless you need to space on the chip, use the vpn build.

Edit: If your problems were over wifi it could simply be the ban, quite a few older wifi chips (mostly intel) don't like 40mhz.

The problem was over wifi and LAN, I have set it to 20mhz only anyway, gets better wireless speeds with my wireless devices.

Am going to load the Victeks RAF mod on it tonight and see how it goes.
