Hi all,

Ideally looking for some recommendations for a new tv, around the 50 inch mark, for use of watching tv generally but also especially for gaming purposes.

Its been a long time since I bought a tv, and I know now there is choice of 1080p screens, 4k, 4k HDR etc etc.

Is 4k really worth it at the moment, I mean, is there really any content for it currently?

I understand what HDR is and does from my background in photography. How does this translate into tv, can you really see a difference between HDR and none HDR tv?

And if it is recommended to go for a 4k tv, how do things like sd signal tv, or consoles that only output in 1080p scale up? I watch tv through a standard sky box, not a + version, as I currently don't watch too much tv, would these sources still look good on a 4k tv?

Much help and assistance required, thanks in advance.

Content = Only true 4k you're going to get is from a beastly PC or UHD Blu-rays. 4k streams are not true 4k. Xbox one S is upscaled 1080p, PS4 pro will be the same but better (by how much no idea).

Yes you can see the difference between HDR and none HDR - this will depend on how much you spend though.

I'd say yes it is worth getting 4k if you have a new console/PC or UHD player AND you spend 1k on the TV (Samsung 7000 series)

Spending less than that won't be worth it imo.

Hope this helps.

Hi yes this most certainly does help. I don't run a pc through the tv, I have an xbox 1 console which I game on as as mentioned a standard sky hd non plus box.

On one hand my thinking was get the newest tech you can, but I can't see 4k being mainstream for a while really, I am wondering if a newer 1080p screen would be a decent replacement for my 8+ year old Samsung lcd 32 inch that is still going strong to this day. I just find it a bit small now hence the reason for looking to change.

Well the 4k TV I suggested will look amazing and it does upscale things, so other none 4k content should look better. The '4k' streams will still look really nice as well.

My thoughts are if you are going to upgrade, do it properly, or drastically lower your budget to like £250, go 1080p and wait a year or two. The Samsung I mentioned will certainly be future proof and will still be awesome as the years pass by.

Thanks you very much for that!

Decision time I guess.
