First time in this little nook of the forums so I hope you guys can help me out.

Long story short I had been sharing my Internet/Phone with my housemate, he's since moved an naturally isn't going to pay for services he doesn't use and hence it's been cut-off. Now I can't afford reconnection/line rental AND ISP charges so I'm looking for an alternative.

I do a lot of web browsing soem downloading but mostly play World of Warcraft, I've been looking at the mobile internet solutions but I reckon 5Gb is far too little for my needs, I could only game but then I'd miss out on my blogs, forums etc...

So what kind of connections can I get without a phone? I heard Cable & Wireless used to provide a service but no more, is there anyone providing ther mythical "data line"?

Anyway I'm babbling, please help!

Im not sure about virgin medias ADSL, but if you have a cable line in your house, you can join up with virgin media and choose to just get internet access

I've heard bad things about Virgin media... Download throttling, P2P blocking and the likes, I shan't be going with them.

i think he meant virgin media cable, as you require a phone line for adsl whereas cable doesnt require an existing phone line.

Failing that, borrow your neighbours wireless access point.. ;)

Theres loads surely? Just as for a net line, no phone line required...

Well saying that, most ADSL lines require some form of BT line anyway...But if you can do that just by paying to 'have' the line, but no actual phone use for it I have no idea.

For home/consumers, if you can't get Virgin Media Cable then you have to have a BT line (unless you live in Hull, but lets not go down that road)

There's no choice about it really, the other things you can do just get progressively more extreme:

3G/Celluleur
Satellite
Long-Range/Friendly neighbours WiFi (ASK FIRST!)
Fibre/Leased Lines
ISDN (afaik BT have discontinued their ISDN services much to the annoyance of the broadcast radio community - it's a damned useful service)

There is no P2P blocking (i use utorrent a lot and can easily max out my connection on torrents). As for the throttling, IMO their limits are reasonable, like on 20Mb you have to download 3GB during prime time for the traffic management to kick in, or 6GB during the earlier time period, and unless you are a very heavy downloader, this wont be a problem (although it may be on the slower speed connections which have lower limits).

Personaly ive been with VM (and blueyonder b4 it became VM) for about 10 years now, and ive had no major problems with them at all, ive got the speed i pay for, and can easily download everything i want to watch online.

your only real option (read cheapest) is to get VM other than that you could always try two paper cups and a piece of string, because seriously I cant think of any way to get internet without it going down a phone cable thats going to be cheap enough for you. sorry

Application management is on the way and will limit file sharing and newsgroup downloads, it already affects ADSL customers and is being trialled internally for cable. A third STM period is also being trialed, between 12am and 7am you'll find yourself getting capped if you download over 9GB.

wow its getting a bit overkill with all these caps - and now there are introducing a QoS type feature?

Do you have a source for this information?

Not really, it's from a guy who posts on the cableforum.co.uk boards. AFAIK he's an ex-staff member, but info he's posted in the past has turned out to be right, for example the daytime STM.

It all makes sense though given the changes we've seen in the last year. VM can save a lot of money at the expense of a relatively small proportion of customers by managing heavy users into oblivion.
