My AMD +2 heatsink fan as packed in - Can i just place any type of fan on it eg a fast case fan as long as it fits - or does it need to be of certain specs i.e speed etc.

Yes pretty much, just keep an eye on temps. If they are rocketing you need a better fan.

check the cfm rating if possible on your case fan, make sure it matches or beats the stock fan

and just download speedfan or something similar to keep an eye on the temps.
