Need a quick answer on what to purchase, rad or cpu block?

Hi guys,

Im looking for some advice on what would yield better temps in my watercooling loop. Im currently running an E6600 with a danger den TDX block and soon to be 8800GTX with an EK block. Is it worth upgrading the cpu block to a d-tek fuzion or will upgrading my GTS stealth 120.2 to a PA120.2 give me better temps? Is the TDX block now inferior?

Thanks in advance,
-Chris

The Dtek is regarded as one of the best of the newer generation of blocks,I'm using one on a Q6600 and the heat transfer of the fusion is very effective .

The PA range of rads are near or at the top of the current range of rads, not sure how effective your current rad is as I've never used one but I would assume a PA rad would be regarded by most as a better choice, especially if low noise is important to you as it's well known within the WC community the PA's are ahead of anything else with low cfm fans.

Also consider pump and choice of fans, the full cover gpu blocks will restrict flow more than a more traditional gpu block, although I don't think they're as restrictive as some might have you believe, but a powerful pump is still important so a D5 or DDC Ultra with one of the aftermarket tops would help to counteract any added flow restriction from the E.K.

Don't skimp on fans,I personally like the Yateloons and Sharkoon silent eagles, the Sharkoons are my current choice of rad fans, they aren't the quietest but they shift a lot of air without being intrusively loud,if you go for a PA rad though low cfm fans will still provide effective cooling .

Thanks for your reply and I am using 38mm YS-Tech fans @ 5v, I also have a D5 pump. My question basically asked what would be a bigger improvement in performance, a newer CPU block or a PA120.2 radiator? :) Nobody knows?

It's impossible to say which would provide most improvment without properly calculating you're current thermal load vs heat dissipating capabilities of your current rad and fans blah, blah, blah.

If it was me I'd ditch the block and rad for a DTEK fusion and PA 120.2 or if you can fit it in a 120.3.

If you're on a budget change the rad now and look into a new block when funds allow.

I would hazard an educated guess that the Fuzion would achieve more improvement over the TDX than the PA would over the Stealth. Your rad is a current model and a recent one at that whereas your block is a poor man's Cascade which is itself eclipsed by the several years development since.

On the other hand, are your temps a problem or are you just looking for an excuse to tinker? If the temps are an issue, just try putting the fans to 7v instead of 5v. If you want to tinker, the block would be more satisfying and more effective to change.

My temps are kind of high but I fear this is due to a very concave CPU. I will be buying the fuzion then and lapping my cpu when I have some money and I'll let you all know how it goes. Thanks :)
