My 3930 and Gigabyte UD4 and 32GB 1600Mhz RAM is dying and I need a replacement. I suspect the Motherboard as I get failed boots, lock ups after a stable system for many weeks. Maybe the 3930 is failing me after 2 years at 4.6 OC. I have done multiple re-installs etc. I am not sure, but it needs replacing as I use the computer for work as well as games and have the urge for my 2 year upgrade.

  • I use it for Elite Dangerous and iRacing with a NVidia 980. Not a massive gamer, only these 2 games.
  • I mainly use it for processing work and VMWares - hence 32GB RAM
  • I have the CPU under a water block and have plenty of rad space and plenty of case space and will "mild" OC the CPU to 4Ghz.
  • I will not OC the RAM, just want 32GB and 3000Mhz stable RAM

This is what I am looking to replace the core components with the following in a red ish theme to match my red 980. Also I am taking the opportunity to swap out the old water block I have for a new one at the same times as changing from Blue to Red fluid. I have a wide 360 push pull rad on top just for the CPU, way overkill.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Asus X99-S - Intel Core i7 5930K Six Core CPU & Motherboard Bundle ***£30 Saving*** £694.98
2 x GeIL Super Luce 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 PC4-24000C16 3000MHz Quad Channel Kit - Red (GLR416GB3000C16QC) £179.99 (£359.98)
1 x Watercool Heatkiller IV Pro Intel - Acrylic Clear £49.99
1 x Mayhems Ice Dragon Nano Fluid 1L £23.99
1 x NZXT CB-LED20-WT 24x White LED Sleeve - 2m £13.99
1 x Mayhems Dye Deep Red 15ml £5.48
Total : £1,158.01 (includes shipping : £8.00 Ex.VAT).

I was toying with a 5960 and Rampage V, but I don't need all the bells whistles, wireless etc and I rarely max the 6 cores I have and for the sake of another £600+ I am not sure it is worth the 5960 and R5.

Is this a sound build and does it all match?
Thoughts before I go to OCUK tomorrow with card in hand ?

You wont notice much difference in performance, and no idea if these will hit 3000, they may do 2800 without much drama.

mmm, worth a consideration since I long left the benching for fun behind me. They do have pretty red lights on them too and leaves me 4 slots for 32GB more should my VMWare work extend.

Could you go with the 5820k? It's quite a lot cheaper and although has a lower stock clock, once overclocked is only slightly slower than the 5930k - stick with the 5930k if you ever go 2+ cards though. Do you have a specific need for the extra lanes/slight speed?

You sure you dont want that gigabyte board?

And ignore shivy you've already gone from the 5960X so dont drop any further.

5930 it is, equivalent to the 3930 I have and I may go SLI in the future and don't want to limit my lanes with the new Oculus CV1 that has been announced to replace my DK2

I have had 2 gigabyte boards in the past and we don't get along. I hate the BIOS and the daft way it deals with VDroop and other things. Many of the BIOS features do nothing, well on the UD4 and before they didn't. Maybe it is just me and maybe they have changed, but twice bitten, try the neighbors wife :)

Sorry. Asus as a brand name to me is what I want with all the months of reading and putting off I have done.

Ok.

I have tried.

LOL Appreciated, you on the Gigabyte commission plan ? :)
Both memory options printed out ready for tomorrow (TBD) unless anyone else can spot a glaring mistake in my replacement build ?

Nothing like spending some cash on your birthday tomorrow as a treat to yourself :)

What I will say is with X79 they got somethings a little wrong, but they brought out the X79-UP4 which fixed many problems and used IR (international Rectifiers) power phases.

The X99 Gaming5P (the P is important) has a similar socket to the ASUS OC socket so has extra pins to help overclocking and uses IR again.

I'll pass this time on that, but thanks for the effort and the memory recommendation. The more I think, 2666 DDR4 and possible OC to 2800 at that price and leaving spare slots is a no brainer.

UPDATE:

Just got back from OCUK

Went with the Avexir 32GB 2666Mhz ram as recommended but bit the bullet and picked up a 5960x ;)

Thanks all :)

Damn 5960X. That'll last you for a while :)

Hopefully 2 more years :)

They have been in and out of stock for days and they happened to have a few this morning. For the sake of £350 and kicking myself constantly for the next 2 years, it was rude not to drop one in the bag.

And now the learning process begins all over for me, 1st time in a long time I have read a mb manual :) Little bit disapointed with the lack of SATA cables in the Asus X99-S, but I have plenty of spares. Beast of a motherboard and loads and loads of auto features that I will probably use to get me to a mild OC of 4.0 or 4.1.

Thanks all for the excellent advice. Virtual beers on me :)
