Buy another one and strip the insides out and replace the switch
Thanks mate that's it. On closer inspection of the faulty ones I saw sparks from a bit in its board, didn't wanna risk it so bought a new one.

Why don't you have your fan coming on with your light? I always wonder why people choose not to have this....It's pointless having a fan if you walk in and just have the light on.

Indeed, plus if you also supply a constant phase as well as the light phase you can adjust them (well the ones with built in timers
) to continue extracting for 15-40 odd minutes after the lights are turned off 
Just installed a couple the other day.

It is yes but it was quite common before hoods.
