Need a sandbox game with direction

I'm currently bored with Anno 2070 and I'm playing Theme Hospital for the 100th time, so I'm feeling the need for another game.

I'm in the mood for another sandbox game, but my problem is that I like this type of games with a campaign mode. Simcity and Open Transport Tycoon are great, but without a set of objectives, I get lost and bored. I know it goes against the word sandbox, but I don't like to be thrown into a game and told to have fun. I like to have my hand held at the beginning, fufilling objectives and earning new tools and unlock.
This was the main reason why I prefered Rollercoaster tycoon no.1 over no.2, it had scenarios that gave you objectives with new toys on each different map.

I was looking at Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion since I own the original game, but since I have no interest in MP, I not sure it'll be providing anything new, especially since the single player seems to just be MP with bots again.
The Civ games are another franchise I've been interested in, I've played various demos but it was all a bit too much, too soon for me and I became lost and confused.

I appreciate any recommendations, give me something else to do besides cure bloaty head.

if you prefered RollerCoaster Tycoon 1 and RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 then maybe their add-ons are an idea? or RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 with its two expansions - i find myself going back to that all the time!

Tropico 3/4 have campaigns but the missions don't really connect, they're just scenarios that get progressively harder.

You get objectives as you play, like "export 500 blah blah" so it might be what you're after.

Well I just bought Endless space, saw the deal on steam and watched a preview of someone playing it, so thought why not.
I needed a break from Open TTD, after 2 of my trains had a crash...

Still open to some more suggestions though, very tempted with rebellion, but hopefully this will give me my space building fix.

just hit me, if you are an openTTD fan like me, what about Chris Sawyers remake - Locomotion. Awesome game, with some very, very good challenges. Wasted far, far to many hours playing that!

it was the sequel to transport tycoon, running off an enchanced Roller Coaster Tycoon Engine. similar sort of play, new scenarios with objectives.. complete one to unlock the next...

Not sure if it's quite what you're looking for, but I enjoyed Dungeon Keeper 1 and 2 immensely in my younger years. If you're into your space "sims", I'd recommend the Homeworld or X series.

How about Civ V, you get some scenarios to full fill when you first start up then you have endless amounts of user dlc.

Thanks for the suggestions, keep them coming if you can, always something to look out for on a steam sale ;)

Sunk some time into Endless Space last night, got my arse kicked in the 1st game buy a band of pirates with a fleet power 6x the best that I had. So i decided to lower the difficulty for the next game. Quite enjoying it though, suffered at work all day dues to 5 hours sleep.

Maybe not quite what you are after, but have you tried games such as Fallout 3 and Skyrim? Story driven when you want them to be, but you can easily go off and do your own thing for hours on end.
