Need a sandbox game with direction

Well Endless space was fun for a few games, but it's not kept my interest, not much in the way of tactics when it comes to space combat.
Was looking on steam at Fray today, which perked my interest, but seems to have no single player, let alone a campaign.

Reinstalled X3 to have another go.
 
Not really sandbox, but if you like strategy/base building, try Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance. Some of the maps are absolutely huge. Also, it has very pretty explosions :p
