First Scooter/Bike - need help!

Hey all,

I was told today that you can legally ride a scooter/bike at 17 years old on a provisional license... which I never knew before. And it seems soooo cheap to run (Tax/MOTs/Petrol consumption) compared to a car that I'm thinking about getting one.

Just need some help on where I could get them and what I am legally allowed to drive on a provisional.

Thanks and hello to everyone in Motors - its my first post here :D

Cool, whats the cheapest I could find a bike for that is road-safe and will last a few years? Have been looking around but am completely new too all this :(

Actually, you could have had a scooter at 16.

At 17, I was looking at getting an aprillia RS125, fast enough, but prone to blowing up :p

I'll just be using it to get to work and friends houses etc, max 10 mile journey probably.

I found this site which has cleared a lot up but has information from 2001 on it still.

So after I take my CBT etc what bike would I be aiming for? I was told I should aim around 125CCs or similar?

remember to be legal it has to be a restricted 125.

as with most two strokes the faster the bike the more prone the engines are.

the suzuki rg series (seems these are so old know there's none on autotrader)
and the aprila 125 series

yamaha dt (scrambler style)
Yamaha YBR 125

are good for speed and when unrestricted are insane.

But the rg is prone to not starting unless bump started, however I'm not sure what the aprilla is like.

Gilera Runner VX 125, very nice scoots, 4 stroke etc etc. I have just got one (month or 2 back), I love it :)

You can ride any bike at 50cc at 16 years old. At 17 years you can ride any bike to a 125c bike.

Until you pass the big test (you can do at 17).

You don't want a 50cc bike, they go far too slow. Get a 125cc bike, for the same price more or less.

Good luck!

restricted is it 33bhp? or is that after your full test, I forget know.

isn't it something like 14bhp at 17, and 33bhp at 17 with a full test(for 2 years then anything).

yep :)
f you are aged 16 you can only ride a 50cc bike, a moped. To ride this you`ll need a CBT and can then ride with L plates. Remember, a CBT lasts two years.

If you are aged 17 or over you can ride a 125cc bike that has a power output of 14.6 bhp. To ride this you`ll again need a CBT and can ride with L plates. For a full licence (i.e. one where you need to take a test) if you are 17 you can go for the category A1 licence or a restricted category A licence. An A1 license lets you ride a 125cc motorbike, without L plates. A restricted A licence lets you ride a bike up to 33bhp. You`ll need a CBT before you go for these tests and for an A1 you must do the test on a bike between 75cc and 125cc. For a restricted A licence the bike must be 120cc-125cc and reach a speed of 100kph (60mph). After two years on an A licence and providing you are 21 at that time, you`ll automatically be upgrade to a full licence.

So if you want to remain legal, be carefull when buying a 125, when they say legal learner, there usually for the 33bhp restriction not the 14,6bhp. So double check before buying.

Thanks guys, you've all made it a lot clearer :)

So what price range am I looking at? I need it as cheap as possible tbh

if you want ultra cheap, ultra reliable there's only one option.

Honda cg125 wont do more than 65mph, but ultra mpg, and totally bomb proof.

Remember budget for safety clothes,
min
helmet
gloves
jacket
dr martins or other study shoes with ankle support.

recommended
helmet
gloves
trousers
jackets
boot.

hey dj binks how you liking the scooter i want a gilera runner 125 but i did want a sp but im thinking of the vx now but whats the acceleration like on them and whats the top speed youve had out of it?

If he wants a cheap reliable 125 then the last thing he wants to be looking at is stuff like the Aprilia RS125 and Cagiva Mito.

Get a Honda CG125 or a Suzuki GS125. 4 stroke, reliable, easy to ride, do 70 - 85 ish mph. GS looks a bit better IMO and feels nicer to ride to me.

Yamaha SR or the Honda CG 125cc bikes seem to be a good choice if you're after a manual. Manuals tend to be better if you plan on taking your full test later on.

(i'm not a lover of scooters, have driven a few and they just don't do it for me)

Hi,

the SP is a 2 stroke so it will have better acceleration than the VX. Top speed is around 70 on the VX, and it seems that the SP is around the same (although I have been told its around 65). The guy I got mine off went for the SP for the replacement as he prefers 2 strokes.

I think it all depends on how you ride/how far you want to ride. a 4 Stroke will happily sit all day on full throttle, where as a 2 stroke will probably blow up!

I use mine for commuting around 10 miles a day and I will start going on longer journeys (around 60 miles round trip - to my Brothers house etc.)

Mine could do with a re-spray :(, I am thinking darker metallic blue with black (just a slight change on what it is now)
