Need a solid non-gaming build

I am thinking about putting together a PC that would function as a secondary desktop for my university work.

I already have a gaming pc and laptop but would rather keep the gaming pc for gaming/multimedia and the laptop for being out and about.

I want something that I can keep seperate and do some work on in the house. It would need to be powerful enough to browse the web and use software like word and evernote. However, no gaming would occur on it.

I already have a spare case, monitor and windows 8.1 but would need everything else. I would ideally be willing to spend about £300 or so on all the other stuff I need.

Could anyone toss some ideas my way? I would much appreciate it!

Thanks for the suggestions Grimley. I forgot to mention that the case is mATX so that cuts down somd mb choices I'm sure.

I was initially thinking intel cpu but could I get away with AMD? Last AMD I had was athlon64 so kind of feels a bit weird.
