heya guy/gals

i recently friend my old build (i have no idea how, only think i know is i took out pretty much everything)

and on january 21st i will be buying a new rig with a 5k budget, the advise and opinion i need is on a case for the rig, i have brought it down to 2 different cases, both from thermaltake... before i give you the 2 cases i have chosen, i would like you to read through the rig (bare in mind this is only the guts, im also buying a few other bits and bobs to replace older stuff)

Plextor PX-760SA 18x18 Dual Layer Serial ATA DVD±RW ReWriter - (Beige/Black) OEM x2

Seagate Barracuda ES 750GB ST3750640NS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM x2 (going raid)

Akasa Serial ATA 45cm Blue EL Data Cable x3

OCZ GameXStream 700w Silent SLI Ready ATX2 Power Supply x2 (going dual psu in a lian li case)

Intel Core 2 Quadro Extreme Edition QX6700 "LGA775 Kentsfield" 2.66GHz (1066FSB) - Retail

Asus Striker Extreme nForce 680 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC2-9200 1150MHz WaterCooled Dual Channel DDR2 (OCZ2FX11502GK)

Western Digital Raptor X 150GB WD1500AHFD 10,000RPM SATA 16MB Cache - OEM

Tuniq Tower 120 CPU Cooler

Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Elite Pro - Retail

EVGA GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail x2 sli

Akasa AK-ICR-01 Internal Card Reader

Lian li Lian Li PC-A10

please help me decide, this will be a hardcore gameing rig, also used for home entertainment purposes along side video makeing and some CAD used on it.

so the cooling has to be brilliant (due to im not going watercooling after previous acidents and cost) and also a reliable tower for easy maintanence

thanks, ags

p.s. i have made those changes to my build

hmmm, tasty idea, but the 2 750's are really and purely for space for junk.. no need for speed, only need the raptor 150 for OS, progs and stuff that runs.

forget the Zalman heatsink, there are better ones around...... namely the Tuniq Tower or the Scythe Ninja

ewwww, i dunno, its all about 'custom' and there not really to my favor of looks, but your def right in the stats area, clearly better heat dispertion... not by a lot, but it would be noticeable.

ill have a think on it <3

so, all i need now is comment on what case i should get!! its driving me nuts lol roughly 50 days left till purchase... must be something

ags

can't offer you help on either of those as they are not ones that I would choose...... looks like you'll have a prtty killer system whatever case its in :p

hehe, doesnt help! lol, but thankies, well, what would you choose, im open to opinions as well, also, u mikght want to consider im going window... love seeing the guts of the beast that entertains me at night hehe

ags

i have the Akasa Eclipse with see through side panel...... its great as it big and easy to build into..........

I'd have a look at other cases if I were you, in my experience all the Thermaltake cases I've built PCs in have been quite low quality even if they look good on the outside. Might have changed since I last used one, but definitely find some reviews.

like i said in my previous post which was just closed lol that i made a few changes, im now going for raid on the 2 hitachi's and also going to have 2 650 psu's in a lian li case. also a few other changes, and not right up to 5k no, 5k is my total budget, i have been saving just under a year.

ags lol

p.s. i should have just kept this all to my self, thinking this was the wrong place to start discussing this stuff

go watercooling or phase.

go for bfg cards instead of evga.

well if i went watercooling, i would go over budget with this system (and before anyone else posts that i should spend less on the rig... im not changeing my mind hehe) and... i dont see why bfg are any better than the evga to be honest, not forgetting i will be doing a lot of cad and evga seem more appropriate to me.

Curious then as to why you've selected watercooled RAM.

Spending this much money on a rig is simply gratuitous waste. You'd get a better deal (as suggested in the other 5k rig post) by spending 2.5k now and 2.5k in a year or two, especially since you'll be able to sell on and recoup some of your spending.

A lot of your choices are odd, such as the dual PSUs when a single one would cope with that system happily, or the aforementioned RAM. Even if you're overclocking you don't need such fast RAM, Core architechture doesn't suffer with dividers like some AMD designs. Are you serious about this purchase or are you just willy-waving?

SPOT ON! :) Just because you CAN do something, doesn't mean you SHOULD. Of course, it's your money, but unless you really have it to burn, most of what you're doing really doesn't make much sense. It seems all you've done is simply go through the site and selected the most expensive components without any real consideration as to why you're doing so, short of the fact that you've got the money to allow you to do it.

Not sure if this is still active but ags, why dont you:

1. spend £3k now on your rig
2. Put £1k into savings for two years (to upgrade later)
3. Give me £1k :D

and you'll still be saving money ;)
