I just got a Cree 5w single LED from Aldi (complete with all the don't look at the beam you will go blind warning stickers!)
Uses 3xaaa batteries and for £5 I am rather pleased as an 'general purpose torch'
Not daily use, occasional power cut, looking for stuff under the sofa, but also say fixing cars in the dark sort of thing. There was a good one there you could varie the brightness which seems ideal.
I'd suggest an LED Lenser P3 - uses only 1 battery, its nice and bright, beam is adjustable, small enough for keyring/pocket (or holding in teeth) and yet not weeky small either.
It comes in at about £10 so is not exactly expensive.
Any torch that runs off a single CR123 or AA will do.
I recommend a Fenix LD10 - runs off AA and is IPX8 rated. Small enough to fit in your pocket, light enough to hold in your mouth. Costs ~£40 though. I have the Fenix L1T - now discontinued - which I use at work. It's survived numerous drops and complete immersion in a 14% Sodium Hypochlorite solution.
