Hi,

I'm looking for a very light backup program that will use near on no CPU power.

My brother's PC is very dodgy at the moment & resets when the CPU has high usage for a long time (overheating maybe).

Need to do a backup ASAP.

We've tried Acronis and Windows Backup - both make the PC reset after a while :(

Craig.

run acronis in low priority

take the side off the case, clear dust out, apply thermal paste, add a fan....

etc

Done all that. Also, running it in low priority will still take near enough 100% CPU, it'll just be taken away from Acronis if it's needed elsewhere... won't it?

Damn 5 year old pre-built computers

The CPU actually doesn't go much over 60oC... which is fine. Maybe there's something else wrong. Same goes for the graphic card and other components, none of it's overheating.

backup of what? you could try using xcopy from the shell, don't know what sort of usage it has though.

Preferably a backup of everything (C:\ ~150GB of stuff), a straight xcopy will do for now if it works, I'll try that next :)

Would it be a stupid suggestion to take the side of the case off and blow a desk fan at the innards of the case? Might keep the CPU a little cooler? :)

klite backup next time,

Brilliant bit of freeware, love it.

Google Karens Backup Tool. I use it on my whs with jobs set to run at certain times, hasnt let me down yet and very small footprint.

how can a 2 minute job of putting the hard drive in a different tower possibly be too much hassle

you have spent more time than that putting in a different PSU

and also wasted far more time on this thread

hard drive in a different tower is always the easiest solution (aslong as you have another pc with suitable connectors on MB)
