Need a video compressor for Cannon Ixus output AVI

Ok, I've taken some movies (coffee!) and they're about 160-300MB each so I'm looking for something to compress them down a bit.

I've installed handbrake and it doesn't recognise the AVIs sat on my desktop as a valid source.

Any other programs I could try to compress them? GK?
