Hi guys just ordered 20mb virgin broadband as i'm sick of bulldog telephone line.

any ways i use a wifi belkin ADSL2+ router but now need a cable one.

want a decent brand, can i buy router with a cable modem in one?

which model?

thanks

I dont rate Belkin for Routers, only use Linksys (Cisco) here for customers.

And in UK you can only use the Cable Modem supplied by the ISP, they need to manually (CS on other end of a phone) remove an old Modem using MAC on bottom of it and add new Modem doing same.

They have a log of all Modem MAC's they own so you wont be doing it legally.

too late :( just got one for £13

i just got a cheap Belkin F5D7230-4 cable wifi router, any good? any firmware recommended?

just need something now till maybe get wireless N router.

I got a really good ADSL2+ belkin, get about 13mb with bulldog and this model allows you to lower SNR to increase speed, newer version disabled this (nornally need to use Telnet) , but bulldog cant not fix my fone problem they say its working fine from their test (2nd line support...pfft), when ppl call me they some times dont get through unless they redail many times. BT engineer came and tested it with BT dial tone and it worked 1st time every time, switched back to bulldog...problem.

Resell it as you may end up with hastle as above peep said.

Buy a Linksys, if you get a "N" it will be last Router you need for many years, just check the internals can actually cope with 20meg and 50meg later in the year, manys are only 10meg ports (any Routers).

main PC is connected via rj45 for best speed, other device will use when needed.

well i will try it out if not bin it.

cheers.

actually i will look into a standard G Linksys wifi router

D-Link DIR-301 here (came as part of a bundle... DKT-110 iirc)

I've had 0 Problems at all with it. Would definitely recommend.

I'm with JFan, a WRT54GL and tomato it.

I wouldn't bother with n for now, it won't be final until November, so there's no guarantee that draft n equipment will be fully compatible with the final equipment, or that it will be able to be upgradable to the final spec.

wow I wondered why I was having problems with my router and VM. another thing I noticed is my router falls over when I try to transfer any info over the lan part. It's a belkin. should I buy another router?

He is the one who mentioned N and AFAIK N is fully Certed now and is the next offical one.

There is no point in buying twice.

BTW, DLINK/Netgear are near as bad as Belkin.

Linksys WRT54 here too, been running on BY/VM connection for litterally years and never had any issues whatsoever, and never had to reset it or power off and on again.

Truely a stable and impressive bit of kit!

The basic firmware that come with linksys is genraly naff so will need to flash it with a third party firmware to make it useful especially if you download using bittorrent. same is true with belkin since both use the same hardware for the most part. the current version of the belkin F5D7230-4 isnt too bad and will cope with many more connections then previous versions of this router.
