Need a zoom lens for my D3100

Hi Guys

New to all this and have a standard lens kit, was taking photos of my son playing a footy tournament last Saturday and need something with better zoom capabilities?

£100 to spend, asking for too much at that price?

You are probably looking at a used 55-200 for that sort of money....try somewhere online like London Camera Exchange.
 
Do you mean a telephoto lens? Your kit l;ens is a zoom lens. Zoom just means you can change the focal length. If you want to take photographs of distant subjects and have them appear larger in the frame then you will want a telephoto lens, this doesn't have to be a zoom lens.


Assuming you want more reach then for that budget your best bet is the Nikon 55-200 VR:

You could look second hand or importing from hong kong to get cheaper.

For that price your looking at a 55-200 vr. Brand new can be had for around £120 from amazon. If you want to see the quality of the photos see my thread in this section titles "African adventure" where all photos of the animals were taken with the 55-200 vr

Sorry for thread hijacking but also wondering about purchasing a telephoto lens.
Any ideas on the Sigma 70-300mm? or should I just spend the extra £50 on the Nikon VR 55-300mm or skip the 300mm altogether and just get the nikon 55-200mm VR?

That looks good. Way out of my budget though might keep my money for now and save up for one of these.

Yeah, that's a tempting lens, very tempting for the price, but I just really like how that Tamron is outperforming in about every shot against the much more expensive f2.8 lens:)
