Need advice 9070 at MSRP vs 9070 xt at non MSRP

So I was part of the group trying to get my hands on an 9070 xt yesterday, I messed up on the last evening release batch by accidentally buying the non XT version, by the time i realised all the xt were all sold off. I understand there will be a new batch sold at a higher price point.

My current card is an RTX 2060.

I hadn't really planned for this scenario, it had been pretty obvious to me that the 9070 xt was a logical upgrade at MSRP, the regular non xt version as I understand is 10 - 15% less powerful. when the cost difference was £50 pounds it seemed like a bad deal, now the cost of the XT will be higher (I think atbout £630)

Sorry if it sounds pedantic, i am a student so I have to be frugal with my money and spend more time to think about the cost to benefit.

TL;DR if you were in my shoes would you keep the regular 9070 purchased at £548 MSRP or take the XT at £630?

Many thanks :)

I was in a similar position, although by the time I got on, all (I think) of the XT versions were above MSRP, so I bought the non-XT version (edit: at msrp) and I will be happy with that upgrading from an RTX 3070. I think you will see an even better performance uplift. The final thing is just try it! If it suits your needs then do you need the extra performance? In numbers terms, if the FPS are 60 or above, then you won't notice much benefit, unless you switch all the eye candy on at higher resolutions.

if you can get the XT for £630 I would do that, but what is the likelihood that you can actually get one for £630? the market is strange and difficult to predict, prices might come down to MSRP in 5-6 months time, can you wait that long? do you want to wait that long? also there is a risk that even in 6 months you might not get one at MSRP. Its hard to advise you with 100% confidence that a certain outcome will happen. Because of high demand for AMD and how badly Nvidia has messed up you might not be able to get one at MSRP ever.

but this all goes back to the old saying, "A bird in the hand is better than two in the bush"

the 9070 is still a great card and BIG upgrade from your 2060

If you plan to keep the card for a good few years then the extra power of the XT, will buy you some extra life to the card, but if value matters more then the 9070 will be OK, on average beats the 5070, and if you Overclock it will get even better performance.

in a similar position, the plan yesterday was to pickup a 9070xt, however ended up with the 9070 at msrp.

i think on balance for me it's still a good purchase, at £630 for the xt i'm not so keen, and having watched many reviews the 9070 does pull a lot less power than the 9070xt which for my sff case is not a bad thing.

i will also explore overclocking potential of the 9070 once water blocks are available as i cant help but feel this low power draw indicates significant headroom to push performance even further away from rtx 5070.

edit: also should say that i think amd is still showing good value given the climate, for this upgrade i have moved to a 5700x3d and rx 9070 for just over £700 which is similar to the cost of a 4070 ti and still retaining my current mobo/ram/cpu -- good value for money in my book.

yeah non MSRP is gonna be 40-50 more dear but it's up to you if it's worth the extra I nearly bought a non xt too :P

If you need to be frugal given that the 9070 non XT is going to be a rather nice upgrade for you I'd be inclined to don the sensible hat and stick with what you have.

Is 10-15% extra really going to make much of an extra difference to the longevity of the card? I doubt it and by that point you may well want to be upgrading anyway.

Enjoy the 9070 and spend the saved pennies on something else. :)

The first one, still a good upgrade on your 2060.

If that is really important then I'd just wait a few months until the market calms down.
