Ok so i just bought myself almost a whole new rig which consists of:

Amd 64 am2 x2 5000+

2gb Geil DDR2 PC6400

Abit KN9S mobo

BFG Nvidia 8800gts

I got it all setup and all seemed to be running fine but after about a day or so i was getting BSOD's every so often, although the system rebooted so i could not get any info from them as to the cause.
This was quite rare but non the less quite a worry as this was not somthing i have had with any of my past builds.

I then came home last night and turned on my rig, it booted to Windows and all seemed fine. I then got up to leave the room and the rig just turned off, There was no blue screen of death but more like a sudden loss of power and i could not turn it back on as the power button was totally unresponsive.

After a little tinkering this afternoon i have noticed that if i take out the kettle lead from the PSU and wit for the charge in it to die then plug it back in i can boot the rig once but it will shut down again shortly after booting to the desktop where it again dies. This can be rinsed and repeated and works every time so my guess is that its an issues with the PSU but i cannot be sure.

Just looking for a little advice on this and some expert opinions before i go and blow another ton+ on a new PSU, The one i have now is a Hiper 580w ( http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-005-HP ).

Also not too sure if this would be adequate for my rig as i have heard mixed rumours that the 8800gts is quite power hungry and on top of the above spec i have 2 DVD writers and 3 SATA HDD's along with 3 case fans.

Sorry about the rant guys, Just wanted to be as detailed as possible and any info/direction would a massive bonus!

Thanks in advance guys,

Mef.

As the Hiper i have now is a 580w and is less than a year old and it appears that it has ben this upgrade that has caused its death, do you think that another 580w is the way forward?

I was thinking of moving to a 700w but not sure if this would be required or not, im still not sure what has caused this issue i dont want to waste any money if i dont need to.

There is no way you will utilise 700W. Not at all.

I suggested the Tagan because of it's modular design, but tbh a 520W corsair would also do the job (both superb build quality, both nice and quiet).

Both the Tagan and Corsair look good.....But looking at the other PSU's the 720w Hiper is only 10 pounds more and would have more than enough for future use.

On another note, from the description of the issue i have been having would you agree that this appears to have been an issue with the PSU all along or would you suggest the issue may lie in another area?

Thanks again,

Mef.

Yes, it sounds like the PSU. Especially as Hipers are not really worth buying for the amount of stories there are about them failing.
