Need advice for a good OC rig

Hey there everyone. Been around here for a while, but first time posting ^^

So, basically I have around £1400 to spend (saved up over a long while) and I want to buy myself a computer which is not INSANELY overclockable, but rather good nonetheless (i.e. very good air cooling, not going to water)

I'm a very heavy gamer, so it'll mainly be used for that.

*For the CPU, I've decided I'll go for the Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 and probably a Tuniq Tower for the cooler. (+ some AS5). I'll probably be looking to clock this cpu to around 3-3.2ghz.

*Motherboard... I don't know what to get. a lot of people on here I see are saying that the DS3 is excellent for OCing, but I'd like something a bit more future proof like the Asus P5W64-WS. But, I haven't heard much on that mobo around, so I need some advice on choosing one.

*Graphics card.. another area which I'm confused. I'm willing to spend around £300 on a graphics card, so when recommending me one, please keep in mind which mobo you'd also recommend for the correct specs and such.

*Case - Antec 900... any objections there?

*RAM ... I was thinking Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C4, but most people on here seem to be going for GeIL because it apparently is more overclockable?

*PSU - is this important for the rig I'm about to buy? At the minute I've a PSU which came with a fairly rubbish celeron package.

So... basically I want a system put together which is very overclockable. So I'd greatly appreciate your advice on these things.

Would I need more air cooling than I'm already looking to have?

Any help appreciated!

Good choice with the E6600, for the motherboard get the Asus P5W DH Delux OC'ers have a combo with this setup and 2GB of ram and you can possibly overclock to about 3.4ghz. If you search the forums theres an E6600 overclocking thread that has a table with the processor what kind of cooling and what kind of motherboard people have been using and my above combo seems to be doing the best for overclocking. Tuniqs a great cooler unfortunatly it wasnt in when I ordered so I got a zelman flower at stock speeds at idle it was 20c unfortunatly I only built it saturday and havnt had time to check load temps and overclocked temps so ill get onto that soon. On graphics cards I bought the ATI x1950xtx. I know a load of people say there a waste of money but since there on sale atm the price isnt that for off an x1900xtx so i thouhgt Id just pay the difference, im glad I did.

Hope some of this helps you

Thanks for that mate.

On the subject of the ATI x1950xtx, whats the deal with the master and slave cards? I see both are for sale on the site, but does 1 not work without the other or something?

i.e. I'd have to spend something like 2 x £250 on a gfx card?

Anyone else's input on all my questions is greatly appreciated =)

yeah for crossfire you need mastercard and slave card, pricey most of the time, SLI you just need two identical GPUs

If you're not going crossfire then dont get the master card. Just get the slave.

But if you're going crossfire then you will need both the master card and the slave card.

But imo.. if you have like £500 to spend on some cards. Get a nvidia 8800gtx :P

Yeah, I may very well go for a G80, but it'll probably be a bit out of my price range...

I dont know, I may just go for a single 7900 GTX.

About the cooling I mentioned I'm getting (such and the case etc), is it sufficient for the overclocking I want to do?

would it be not worth while and just wait a little bit longer so you can get a dx10 card? Otherwise in a few months will be obselete :P

The thing is I'm assuming the price of those new cards coming out won't drop anytime soon... and I've been saving up money for so long to buy a really good comp.

I'm not really prepared to wait any longer ^^
