I'm about to do a reformat and I currently have 2 X 320GB in Raid 0. I want to replace my set up with a Samsung 1tb F1 drive. I've got an enclosure for these 2 drives.

I plan on doing the following:

1) Turn off pc, remove both drives.
2) Insert new drive, start installing vista and make a few partitions.
3) Once Vista is installed, turn off pc, connect other drives in Sata ports 2+3. Because transfering 100's of GB's of data across will takes days on USB.

Would my drives just show up as storage drives or will it prompt me for a setup?

What I'd do..

With current system active (and raid 0 active), add new drive, create partitions, copy data to NOT the first parition

remove raid drives, reboot and install vista on partition 1

drive letters will be start at C:

Bledd care to elaborate?

I generally keep 4 partitions on my set up.

1) OS
2) My Docs
3) Games and Applications
4) Movies and large data files

Should I create these partitions on my new drive. Hook it up to current system. Copy files across. Remove current set up, and then start installation?

^they're correct, you might have to 'initialize' it in disk management -within windows

but it won't touch your raid, my gf just moved back up to my flat, so won't be on msn/ocuk at night time anymore :)

Had some problems last night. Being as anal I am with wires, I got rid of all extra cables from my modular PSU and I left them all at home (Sheffield).

That meant I only had 2 SATA power cables, both were connected to the current RAID set up.

It then struck me that I had another Icy box which had a SATA connection port (:D) but shortly realised the the maximum capacity it could take was 320GB.

I then did the following test:

- Left HD 1 from Raid 0 in pc.
- Took out HD 2 from Raid 0 and put it in Icybox with Sata going straight to mobo.

I powered the ext caddie and powered up my pc and viola it booted up into windows.

I tried the same again but this time, with the 1tb HD connected and just after the BIOS screen it hung saying 'something something raid5'

Tried the above scenario but this time with a 160GB HD and it worked a treat, as described above by you guys.

I'm assuming because it's a new drive, it needs formatting as it's not being detected but that said shouldn't it default to FAT32?

Cheers

the default filesystem is no filesystem

format as ntfs

^sounds like you made things a lot harder than they should be tbh!

Heh, it's all over a measley power cable :(

I have to remove all drives as the drive doesn't show up in windows. Will have a crack tonight.

Cheers Bledd
