I am going to attempt my first complete build for a gaming/theater pc to run on an HD projector (3D?). I have ungraded before, but have never started from scratch. There are so many options now…so I need a little help building a balanced system. I have not OC’ed before, but I plan to try for 5 ghz, and increase ram & gpu speed. I have always wanted an asus board and I really do like the HAF case. I am not attached to anything else. My proposed list is below- total ~1100. cheaper and good quality is better... Questions: are any of the parts overkill OR not good enough; which asus mobo is best for the list, iv vs sandy, i5 vs i7, etc.

Hi and welcome.

I've had a play around with the latest weekly offers here at OcUK and came up with this,

YOUR BASKET
1 x EVGA GeForce GTX 670 FTW 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (02G-P4-2678-KR) £311.99
1 x Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £167.99
1 x Cooler Master HAF X-M Midi Tower Windowed Case - Black £119.99
1 x Gigabyte Z77X-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £106.99
1 x XFX 850W XXX Edition Modular '80 Plus Silver' Power Supply £92.99
1 x Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (ST2000DM001) £84.98
1 x GeIL Black Dragon 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Dual Channel Kit (GD316GB1333C9DC) **OcUK Exclusive** £47.99
1 x Alpenföhn Matterhorn Pure Edition CPU Cooler (Socket LGA2011/1366/1155/1156/775/ AMD AM3/AM3+/AM2/AM2+/FM1) £29.99
Total : £979.40 (includes shipping : £13.75).

• Stuck to a single HDD, maybe add a SSD for the OS and games etc?
• Modular cable PSU for a neater build, it also has the power needed for a pair of GFX cards if you wanted to go SLI?
• Retail CPU has a full 3 year warranty and includes a intel heatsink and nice box.

As this is a gaming PC, then 8GB of RAM is ample, but have included the 16GB as its on a today only deal.

Good spec. I recommend going for the Gigabyte 670 and maybe drop the PSU to the:

PC Power & Cooling Silencer Mk III Series 600W '80 Plus Bronze' Modular Power Supply

It's best to run less sticks as it puts less strain on the memory controller, but you will find that 8GB is enough for gaming and your other uses.

You also need a suitable 64bit OS for 8/16GB.
