Recently restructured my finances (yeah yeah offshore banking is such a pain in the ass ;) ) and I am considering making the move to duo or quad.

With regard to the various components I need to invest in I have decided to go for:

1 x BFG GeForce 8800 GTX OC 768
1 x Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "LGA775 Kentsfield"
1 x Corsair 4GB DDR2 XMS2 PC2-6400C5 TwinX (2x2GB)

Now the mainboard I wanted to go with is:

EVGA nForce 680i SLi (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (122-CK-NF68-A1)

However it is showing as out of stock with no ETA. Could anyone recommend a good replacement and any recommendations on the setup or better value changes would be gratefully received.

TIA

BA

As of now, either the EVGA board or any of the P35 boards are the best options for the quads. Tho the EVGA is the only option if you want SLi in the future.

But I would wait until nearer the time before deciding on the motherboard. The new Intel X38 boards are due out soon and they may offer a better option.

Thanks for reply. Is the 6400 memory adequate? Is 4GB overkill? Really want to get the most out of gaming on a 24" widescreen and also outputting to my 42" LCD tv.

Yeah PC6400's fine for the Q6600. And 4gb is fine, tho you'll only get to use ~3.25gb if running 32bit XP or 32bit Vista.

The one thing I am lacking to go ahead with this upgrade is an appropriate power supply. I was thinking about going for the Enermax Galaxy 1000W EGX1000EWL ATX2.2 Modular PSU. Ideally I would love to spread the cost of this upgrade over a few months, is this power supply in any way compatible with my system in my sig? Mobo is a s939 AGP board. I see it as the only one of the items that I could go ahead now and buy and benefit from if until I purchase the rest.

Thanks again

BA

The only reason I would be going for such a big psu is future proofing and ultimately I plan to go SLi. Currently running 4 hard drives, 3 cd/dvd drives but also have a number of other drives in an old pc I plan to move over. This case is a 23 bay Enermax server case so plenty of room for expansion.

With regards the mobo, browse through these forums and elsewhere before deciding. I know a few people who bought 650i/680i mobos and have had zero issues and amazing overclocks, but one more and myself who have had grief with lockups, dead boards, and boot issues, although when it does work it's fast and very, very stable. EVGA support is apparently good, and the RMAs I've had back to BFG have been pretty quick, but they're not the kind of problems you really want with a production board.
