I wasn't really sure whether to put this in the Home Cinema section or in here but seeing as its to do with a screen I thought the intelligent folk of monitors may be able to offer some advice.

Basically in the next two weeks I am looking to buy a new screen, its only going to be a smallish one (approx 19-23inch) with a max budget of £200 (I can stretch to £300 if its really necessary but it will mean I will have to hold back on my planned video card upgrade).

The screen is going to be used for a range of different uses, below is a list of what I will be mainly using it for.

1- PS2/PS3 gaming
2- PC gaming
3- General PC usage (Internet, dvds etc)
4- Watching TV

So the way I look at it is that I have two choices, I can either get a monitor and a TV card or I can buy a LCD TV. I think the TV idea is the best as it will be ideal for TV (obviously :p) be suitable for console gaming (16:9 ratio instead of 16:10) and it can be used as a monitor too.

But then a 1680x1050 screen would be better for PC gaming :D and this is where I go round and round in circles lol. What would you do in my situation and is there any screens that I should be looking at? I have been looking at the LG range though I am not sure if they are any good or not?

Get a monitor and a TV card.

Then you can record the TV you're missing while playing games on your lovely high res monitor.

I'm sure you could get a monitor that you'll be able to connect your playstation to?

What you really need is a monitor with composite and HDMI as well as VGA/DVI inputs. This will allow PC + PS3 and PS2. You could also get a cheap Freeview box to use if you don't want to switch on the PC every time.

Even better maybe the LG M228WD. 22", every input you need, plus built in Freeview tuner. One of the revies suggests the ports aren't great if you plan to wall mount, but if desktop mounting, it is no problem.

Get a monitor and a TV card.

A big monitor and a TV card does tempt me but after having a good look around I think I would have to spend £250+ to get one with component and HDMI connections, although the 1920x1200 resolution of a 24inch model would be perfect for the PS3 :D

This does like like a great screen, it has everything I need and I won't be wall mounting so no problem there. How does it work with regards to PS3 gaming?

It has the component and HDMI connections on it but I wonder what it looks like upscaled, I can imagine 576i and 720p look crap running on a 1680x1050 screen  Also I am not sure what it looks like running at 16:10 ratio when the native is 16:9, just a little stretched, maybe?

I'll have a look at some reviews on the net now and if anyone has any experience of this screen then good and bad points would be good to know.

Sounds like a plan to me! ;)

I have been searching around reviews on the net today and they all seem to say the same thing and that is that most monitors are not great for TV and console games.

I read reviews of the LG models and they say the TV quality is awful and that some channels are barely watchable due to compression and artifacts, console games seem to be ok on it but the aspect ratio still bothers me a little.

I think I am going to have to get a TV as that seems to be a good all rounder and can manage everything I need it for where as a monitor is going to be weak in certain areas.
