Need advice on my next GPU

I sold my 7870 before Christmas and since then have been without a GPU. The main reason for this is I've been busy with work and not much time to game. Now time is freeing up a little so I can get back into it. For some reason I really want to go nvidia over AMD this time as my 7870 was more hassle than it was worth, very bad overclocker, like the 6950 I had before it and I had texture flicker problems as well as the card stuttering and not running at full clocks/usage.

I've looked at performance though and for the price of a 670 I can get a 7970 which basically wins in everything with the new drivers. Anyone been in a similar situation recently between a 670/7950/7970. Also have a feeling I'll buy a card and a week later the 8 series AMD cards release will be announced lol.

Any help appreciated, thanks.

The top 2 you listed are the exact 2 I've been looking at. I'll definitely be going Gigabyte as I have heard nothing but good things about their cards whether red or green.

Sounds excellent considering the 4 series got very warm :p

I probably wouldn't have bought a 480 had it not been this model. Yeah, the 40nm 400 series do get pretty toasty :D, but the highest mine idles is around 40C. On a particularly cold day, I've seen it run at around the mid 30'sC, even with multiple tabs / 2d programs running.

After looking into it further it seems the new Gigabyte 7970's are voltage locked. This doesn't bother me too much as I will only do a slight overclock anyway I think as it should handle anything as stock.

Between the windforce 670 and 7970 now then. I can get the 4gb 670 windforce elsewhere for a similar price to the 2gb one on here.

Is the extra 2gb worth it for future proofing?

All about res you play at and certain games really.

Be careful though some places sell them cheaper but they are *******s to get help from if anything goes wrong! OCUK are very nice and sort everything asap! Ive seen a few people skimp on pennies and had to fork out another £300+ because they either killed the card or it broke and the retailer wouldnt sort it for them!

The 7970 is still best card to get for the price but the 670 is also a decent card.

The other retailer is trusted as well so shouldn't have issues. If AMD can sort out the memory latency problems I'll most likely get the 7970.

If you use radeon pro it fixes them anyways.

I was ****ed because half my games were not smooth! Installed radeon pro all sorted now :)

I think amd are working on some drivers to fix it too so its only time.

You install it select the game application and it adds it to a list which is then saved :).

You can change settings all you want but i leave at default and just change the vsync to dynamic which caps the fps to screen refresh rate.

Its good for games that go to like 8k on menus and over use the gpu and it makes games totally smooth its even fixed texture problems it coh for me! Such an amazing tool!

Get the Gigabyte 7950 over the 7970. The difference is minimal.

I'm gonna have to go nvidia I'm afraid as the 7 series has stutter/crashing problems with fifa 13 and I play it often. Also play BF3 a lot and the 670 is on par if not better than the 7970 in that.

Here are pics of the cards that I have had over the last few months.

I had the 7950 top earlier last year.

The 7950 and gtx 670 Windforce editions had the coolest temps matching the 7950 top but that is a 3 slot cooler. All under 70c on auto fan profile.

The EVGA FTW SIG 2 had the highest stable overclock at 1254 mhz with temps reaching 75c average and the ASUS dcu2 670 getting a stable 1241 which is good considering it's not the top edition. Temps were 72c average.

Both cards were on auto fan profile.

The ASUS dcu2 has a base clock of only 915 but boosted out of the box to 1124.

The 7950 is the best value card imo but I found that the 670's gave smoother and more consistent frame rates across a wide variety of games.

My Windforce 670 didn't overclock very well at all. Out of the box it has a 980 base clock and boosted to 1137 mhz. Stable overclock only reached 1154 mhz, so I got a poor overclocker.

The ASUS cards are the quietest imo. I could not hear the card until I increased the fan speed to 80 percent.

The Windforce cards were the coolest.

And the EVGA was the fastest.

Build quality goes to ASUS then EVGA imo.

Be aware that the ASUS dcu2 gtx 670 has 2 green led's next to the power inputs. They are quite bright and they don't turn off when you power down.
