Need advice on upgrading from I5-760 to 3570k

Hi all I need some advice. I am thinking of upgrading my I5-760 to a 3570k as I want to upgrade to either a GTX 660ti or AMD 7950 from a 5770 as I know my 1st generation I5 would cause a bottleneck with the cards mentioned above.

Now im not really interested in benchmarks, I am more interested in performance in games with regards to FPS etc on the CPU as ive read that the FPS is really good with the 3570K and was wondering what people think about the upgrade and would it warrant the £642 I priced the relevant parts at on overclockers with 8 GB ram and a H60 cooler.

Or my other option was to get the H60 cooler, 8 Gb ram and one of the graphic cards and overclock my 760 to maybe 3.2 or 3.4 Ghz and hope that will help the bottleneck. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Anthony

Received my 3570k today to replace i5-750. Will let you know how I get on but you would probably be surprised how few games are cpu limited, assuming you game in 1080p+.

It's unlikely you'd need a fancy cooler to get 3.4ghz out of your current cpu.

An overclocked i5 760 will not bottleneck those graphics cards.

I run one with an arctic cooling freezer 7 pro and it does 3.8ghz easily.

Overclock your i5 760 and get a new graphics card.

Ok thanks for the advice, when I overclocked my 760 to 3.4 by just altering the the BLK from 133 to 155 I think it was then I got up to 69 - 70 degrees with a Freezer 7 pro. But will try again. Thanks.

69 to 70 with a freezer 7? Is it seated correctly and what is the fan speed? I had a freezer 7 pro cooling a 955 BE at 3.7 and 1.41V to a max of 47C

Keep what you have and clock it. Haswell is out next year along with a new socket. If you went with a 3570k you would be going from one dead socket to another with no upgrade path.

Is your voltage set to auto? That could have been the cause of the temp increase. You need to get to the bottom of your temp problem before going for a max overclock.

I would definitely overclock your CPU a bit more and you should be fine, I was in the same boat looking at upgrading to a 3770k but I've got my 760 to 3.8ghz and it's been great.

Haswell next year also put me off, I'd rather stick it out a bit longer and see what it has to offer.

I think I'm getting around 35 idle temps with an H50 and 2 Apache fans, now that "winter is coming" it should dip a bit more too.

I've had my i5-750 at 4GHz for over two years now and am only using a Corsair A50. I plan to upgrade when Haswell is released.

4.2GHz should be doable on an i5-760 with a decent chip, but if not certainly 3.8-4GHz

For games at and around 60fps an i5 750/760 is almost identical to the 3570k clock for clock. So at 3.8ghz you'll be matching a stock 3570k. I recently made a similar upgrade due to a friend wanting my old PC. It benefits me as I game at 120fps and above tho.

Overclock your i5-760 to 4Ghz. Job done!!

Performance difference from i5-760 to 3570k seems to be around 15-20% on average, so not a huge performance gain. In gaming you may only see few fps increase, that's it.
