Hello,

Most of my PC is about 7 years old (apart from the gfx card) so I need some advice on what to upgrade first.. on a budget.

Specs:

Mobo - Asus P5Q-E
CPU - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz
RAM - 4GB DDR2 400MHz dual channel
GFX Card - AMD R200 series (I think 270) 2GB GDDR5 Core clock 945MHz
HDD - Samsung HD753LJ 750GB, WDC WD10EARS-00Z5B1 1TB and WDC WD1200JS-00NCB1 120GB

Currently runnning Windows7 but will install W10 once I get a new HDD.

I know I am limited by my motherboard as it has poor specs:

- LGA775 socket for Intel® Core™2 Extreme/Core™2 Quad/Core™2 Duo/Pentium® dual-core/Celeron® dual-core/Celeron® processors
Compatible with Intel® 05B/05A/06 processors
Supports Intel® 45nm multi-core CPU

- 4 x DIMM, max. 16GB, DDR2 1200/1066/800/667MHz, non-ECC, un-buffered memory

- 6 x SATA 3Gb/s

I know I need to upgrade the motherboard but I would have to upgrade the CPU at the same time which I can't afford right now, I will have to purchase parts in stages to spread them out.

I use my PC for playing games mostly and the occasional 3D modelling and Audio production. I intend to buy the Oculus Rift at some point this year but I realise my PC in it's current state is not powerful enough.

I think buying a new HDD or SDD could be the first step as my HDD are so old I worry they could give up at any moment and I want to install W10 on a fast drive. Are the hybrid drives any good? I am looking to buy one around the £50 mark to use as the primary, disconnect the 1TB and keep as a backup and use the 750GB as a secondary HDD with unimportant files on it. If I buy a 6GB/s HDD,SDD or hybrid drive would it still run at 3GB/s on my motherboard?

And RAM, 400MHz DDR2 is pretty weak but I doubt that's worth upgrading before I get a new motherboard as I don't think DDR3/4/5 would fit in DDR2?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I built this PC years ago and am not up to date with the latest advances so I'm back to being a novice at this.

You would have to upgrade the CPU with the Motherboard and memory. Don't bother with a Hybrid drive, get a SSD instead. You wouldn't get full speed from an SSD using your current setup. What is your total budget for upgrades? You may be looking at a whole new setup.

Yeah I probably am looking at a whole new setup eventually. If I bought a SSD would it run alright in my system apart from running slower than it should? My budget for upgrades would be around £200-250 as I am reluctant to upgrade my gfx card as it's relatively new.
