Hey guys.

I am looking at getting a camera for myself and the gf. Neither of us have used a dslr before but we have always wanted to.

The option I have are:

Canon 350d with 19 - 55mm lense for £450

Olympus E500 with 17-45mm lense, 40-150mm lense, 1 Gb CF card, olympus ps100 printer, case for £540 or £420 with just the 17-45mm lense

Nikon D50 with 18-55mm lense for £380

To be honest there is not 1 specific aspect of photography that we will be concentrating on.

Will I notice the difference between a 8mp and 6mp camera?

Based on the prices above which one would you got for or are there better deals out there?

I don't want to go over £540 if possible.

I know you guys get asked this question a lot but I would really appreciate any help.

Or if you email me then I could point you in the direction of another camera which has more kit come with it and is cheaper than the 350D :)

Not really, the extra 2mp hardly give you any extra resolution. Its useful but there are more important factors.

As for the cameras you've listed the 350D and the D50 are the best. A good idea would be to go to a local camera shop and try them both out, you may find one of them more intuitive than the other.

Both the Nikon D50 and Canon 350 are great cameras, i have no knowledge of the Olympus, the 350D is meant to be a slightly better camera, but it does however cost more. Overall either of those 2 would be a good choice.

You won't notice the difference between a 6mp and 8mp unless you want to start producing v large prints. Both should be able to do A4 prints.

I was in a similar situation not long ago, I decided on the 350d and kit lens for £450, getting a 4 gig microdrive and card reader for £40, I'd given myself a budget of around £500. There seems little difference between the canon and nikon from what I've found. I just thought since canon are a slightly better known brand and if I upgrade the chances are it'll be another canon, so I could keep the lenses. I don't think there is anything in it really other than preference, and also if you've used either before and are familiar with controls, or have friends with the same brand who could lend you lenses or give you advice.

Also how they feel aswell, some people prefer the feel of the nikon because of the size of their hands or its material.

I love my 350D as a baby canon and am very happy with my purchase.
primarily because of the number of lenses I can get for it 2nd hand to stick to a lower budget.
Is it the olymupus that has IOS built into the body housing!?
just about the only thing that would tempt me to change on a budget range

also I got my £100 cashback from the mastercard promotion this week...sent off the form early january...so am well chuffed with that :)

Cheers guys. I picked my 350d up today and the battery is just charging. Expect to see some shockingly awfull pics from me some time this week.

Any good links for tutorials? I really am at square 1
