Given the option of these two, which would you choose? They'll probably be used most of a bus if that makes any difference? 99% of stuff played will be 160-192K MP3s.

Neither, I've owned both and they're nothing special. Sennheiser CX300 are miles better for the same price as the EX71 (£30). Creative EP630 are supposed to be good too (£15).

yes neither of them!! you'll regret it. mx500's are ok, but they dont sit in your ears very well and sound crap unless you jam them right into your ear canals. and that hurts lol.

ex71's block noise well, sound average and tiring and fall apart like clockwork. avoid them

ep630's and cx300's are largely the same, save a different style of chord ('J' vs 'Y') and a slightly different sound. The cx300's sound the best but honestly, for the money, the ep630['s are my choice:)

Dont listen to people who recommend the ex71's - they just dont know any better.

edit: also look around, the cx300's are currently available for £22.99 inc P&P

On the other hand my experience with the Sonys was excellent.

I had mine for well over a year, used daily. They never broke, I sold them with the iPod.

They sounded far better than all other headphones I have owned.

Sound quality is very subjective, and unfortunately, headphones are one of the harder things to test due to the nature of the product.

tesla the biggest problem is with the sonys is that they USED to be built from good materials. my gf had an old pair (>1 year) ex71's and they are still going today. infact i use them right now because i havnt bought myself a pair of cx300's yet and the only thing wrong with them is the silver has warn of them lol. i've had two newer pairs of ex71's since she bought her's and they chords turned to dust in months. That's how well built they are;)

as for sound quality of coruse, it's totally subjective. what other IEM's have you compared them to?

got a pair of ex71s in Hong Kong for 16 quid. To be honest they are fine, but not a patch on my SHURE EC2s. However they were about 45 quid.

I had a pair of Mx500s until they recently fell apart. I thought the sound quality from them was good. Nice deep punchy bass. Then again I don't really have anything to compare them against, apart from the crappy ipod headphones
