need advice

Hi guys, my laptop screen has broken and so i've gone out and brought a vga to vga cable enabling me to play my laptop through my tv. However, apparently I need to use the laptop and switch it to display mode but I can't because I can't see what I'm doing on my laptop! What can I do?

It's a Dell 1545 mate
