I'm in the middle of planning for a little project i have been thinking about for a while now, basicly it's a big picture frame fitted into a partition wall between my front room and my temp bedroom/workshop :)

the wall is plaster board with nothing in-between and will be using my current 20" Samsung and was going to use a beaten up old lappy to drive it (athlon xp / geforce mx2 ubuntu 9.10) but have now decided to also use it as an aquarium sim as well but i'm having a few problems finding a good one and the one's i have found don't have min specs

i do have a couple of other options, i also have my home server (running whs) and it's spec's are athlon 64 x2 3600+ 2gb ddr2 and 8600gts and a good old xbox360 hd-dvd drive with a salt-water aquarium hd-dvd but it's basicly just a vid of a fish tank and isn't really what i want so back to the screen saver option

so what i'm looking for is an awesome screensaver that will run on one of the options above and maybe other options i haven't thought of yet :D

if all go's well i will post a build log but not sure where's best to post it (if this is in the wrong forum could the mods please move it)

anyway should be doing this next week so will update when done :D

thanks for getting back to me, but i was really looking for a ready made one as i just don't have the time to make my own but thanks anyway :)

i love computers and great graphics, and i love aquariums and nicly planted aquascapes.

I have often thought about having a screensaver as an aquarium, but it doesn't beat the real thing.

Google "in wall aquariums", and set up a live aquascaped tank :D

in an ideal world (one where i have the money :)) i would love a real tank but unfortunately it just isn't an option right now, the main reason for doing this is a photo frame using old parts i have around the house, the monitor is my current one from my main pc as i plan to replace it anyway as there is a dead pixel right in the middle but wouldn't be a problem as a photo frame ect

plus the added bonus of not having to deal with dead fish :D

Im fairly sure XP MCE had a pretty aquarium screensaver. whether it will run on your spec I do not know. Might be worth a look into though.

LOL! Next we will be getting rid of our windows (the wooden/plastic frame ones :D)

Only joking! Sounds like a good idea, not sure where there is a good screensaver though, but i think i would like to steel your idea too if you don't mind!

don't mind at all m8, i'll post some pics as soon as i'm done should be late next week as long as i have the cash :)

Well it's taken longer than i hoped but the screen is mounted in the wall and just needs a little tidy up :)

after many set-backs inc my budget for the project being next to nothing (dam bills ) and the laptop i'm using failing to do anything other than a basic slide show it's up and running and as soon as i have a little more money to get cables ext will probably set my server up as a replacement for the old beaten up lappy :)

one of the other set backs was my camera kicking the bucket :( meaning the construction pics are gone forever :(

but i will do my best to explain what's missing in pictures

1) i used the monitor as a template then cut the hole in both sides of the wall

2) as i said above the budget was slashed to almost nothing so the custom steel plate i had planed to the mounting bracket didn't happern so an off cut of 12mm MDF was used :p, yes i know bodge job but it works :D this was fixed between the frame of the wall (cost nothing :D)

3) holes were drilled and rude words were spoken as i tried to line everything up but got there in the end :D

and here it is a hole in the wall with a monitor in it :D

and from the back

last up is finishing up the frame, again lack of budget so a chunkier frame is being used (for the time anyway ;) ) and maybe something on the back but to be honest it's not really a concern right now

anyway will update when finally finished (hopefully tomorrow)

right it's been a while but it's all finished now...... well bar some modifications to the pc powering it (having to use my laptop at the mo :()

as you can see below the screensaver problem has been sorted, i'm using serene screen Marine Aquarium 3 and i have to say i'm very happy with it so much so i may add a couple of extra screens to the set-up as Marine Aquarium 3 can be used on upto 3 screens :D

anyway here's the single screen version :)
