Hi All.
Wanted to start on another project to further my non existent knowledge of networking and have decided to do an all in one router/NAS box. I need some guidance and i know the questions are quite particular to this setup but i know how popular the hardware is so hopefully someone has done something similar to this.
I currently have an HP microserver gen8 running Xpenology as a NAS server with 2x2tb hd's running Xpenology from a USB drive.
My plan is too swap the system so it runs ESXI and setup XPEnology and PFsense as Virtual setups. but i am getting myself confused how to set-up all the hardware for it.
First off the server has only 4gb of memory should i look at increasing this?
Should i run the ESXI from usb drive or use a separate small 32gig SSD?
How does the storage work for the NAS under VM's? do i have to do anything special to the 2x 2tb drives for the VM to see them and is it easy to setup direct access rather than virtual drives? i plan on runnung each drive as its own share rather than merging the two.
The server only has two NIC ports. will i need an additional card? i am guessing just for Pfsense one port would be for WAN and one for LAN so would need additional ports for the NAS.
Thanks for the help in advance guys. was also maybe looking at upgrading to a Xeon CPU but for the price i could get dual CPU rack server but i think that maybe overkill for my needs.
