Need Advise on first Smart Phone

Hello Everyone
First post so hello all.
I need to get a first smart Android phone and need advise, it needs to work PAYG at first, screen size 5 inch, and needs a version of Android that runs a browser today. And it needs to be cheap.
Any advise would be appreciated.

Second hand is fine and price about £40- £50.

for 40/50 and looking at 2nd hand yer probably best off just scouring FB marketplace of the likes.
It's gonna be pointless anyone speccing you anything 2nd hand as theres literally gonna be hundreds of individual phones for sale.

Is the 5" Screen a maximum?

Theres some fairly decent Android phones in that post, most of which quite modern that will run a more upto date version of the OS too

@thyristor44 Don't let the lesser names like xiaomi or redmi put you off mate.
We gave the parents note 9pros, for Xmas and as usual I debloated them and set their logins n stuff up.
Was tempted to get shot of my p30 Pro.

I know another mate also does this every Xmas and he got his parent the note 8 and they're more than happy with them.

Yes they're a lesser name over here but the hardware really is competitive even with some of the higher end phones.

Keep yer eyes peeled on hukd with the names as alerts and I reckon you'd have a phone ordered soon enough haha

Divine Wind I have tried some friends phones and there is no way I can accommodate a 5 inch phone. I lead a rough life, fencing building etc. 5 inch would not last any time at all.
I tried an old Sony Experia at 4 inch ish. Perfect size to go in pocket.
Can I change my spec from 5 inch to 4 inch. Any ideas it does not need to do any banking or the likes so not sure if it needs updates.

I think both jcb and cat made standard and android phones there were meant to be site proof, doubt they'll come up often likd

Not a clue about the cost of them tho
