Need an AGP card

I bought a 7900GS 256MB AGP for my aging P4 northwood 3.35GHz (OC'd) system aswell as upgrading to 2GB of ram. I ended up upgrading completly after about 5 months as to be honest, it was naff. I spent about £600 on my new PC and the money I spent on the ram/graphics would have gone nicely towards it.

Keep what you've got till you can afford an upgrade.

you will get adapter leads with the GFX card that convert a 4 pin molex to a 6 pin? pci e connector
Thanks
You can get this.
But some mobos can still work with 20-pin (ATX 1.3)

Thanks but how can i tell if my psu is ATX 1.3?

@fobose

Thanks for the tip. I Have the option to get the Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 3850 512MB AGP for £88 new and this has just made me think again about getting it if my system can handle it.

Anyone??

Hi there,

£88 seems a good price. And a lot less than building a new PC with PCI-E and a new OS.

If you are going to keep the old computer for some time I see nothing wrong with spending some money on the card. If you do decide to build a new PC later you may well be able to sell the Saphire 3850 agp on for a small loss.
(the Saphire 1950agp can fetch around £60 second hand)

You will probably find the dual molex to 6 pin PCI-E sufficient (if you have two spare seperate molex lines), I think the Saphire is 75w 6 pin? My old 480w Hiper powered my HIS 150w 8pin PCI-E with the two seperate molex lines into a six pin adaptor.

I think the 3850 is a good all rounder with plenty of options for games and movies, I have found my DVD replay was a codec issue and am now getting smooth DVD replay and HD 720 replay, some stuttering in games I sorted by using CCC and selecting performance over graphics, able to run C&C Generals on the highest settings and C&C 3 on medium/high settings at reasonable speed.

I still think it is worth building a new computer, but at least this card is letting me continue to enjoy what I have at a reasonable level while I save and try to decide on what to build next, and will be sellable for a reasonable amount if I decide to sell later.

With AGP the 3850 is better value than a NVidea 7900 or 7950, and more powerfull than the 1950, so what if the CPU is creating a botleneck! Why spend the same money on a lesser spec card?

Thakns for that info sastusbulbas, it is much appreciated.

You mention about building a new system and will definately be doing this but not sure when as funs are a little low at the minute. I do hope it will be in the next 6 months. This card wouldn't be wasted when i upgrade as my son will probably be making use of this pc which it would be in.:) The only thing that i am possibly worried about is if the psu can deffiately handle it with ease as i have 3 hdd's and 2 dvd-rw drives and 2 case fans running at the moment. Then it would be taking 2 more molex for the saphire card.

Can anyone assure me that my psu can handle all this? I know HP7909 said it can handle the video card but what about with all the other things attached?

Well still waiting for someone to confirm my psu status.:D I might just have to leave it for now if i have to buy a new psu aswell.
