Hi Guys

I have had a ReadyNas Duo for quite a number of years and never really learnt how to use it's full functionality. It is network connected I have 2 partitions one for back up and one for media. My sonos and TV's can see the media and my PC can pick up the back up. It's in Raid whichever mode is simple twin copies. But I've never really got much further. My PC and networking skills whilst never great are much diminished and I'm unlikely to find the time with kids to polish them much.

I'm thinking of getting a new NAS because the ReadyNas Duo can't live forever and wanted some advice on models with really easy and intutive interfaces, if such a thing exists.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

You tend to get more bang for your buck with QNAP, but the trade off for me is that the Synology is probably easier to use. I now have a QNAP and used to have Synology.

What more do you want it to do?
Honestly I'm not sure, I've never used it as an itunes server or sorted out autmatic backups. I'm sure there is a load of unctionality just stting there unused. But most of all I'm more thinking that it's quite old and want to start having a look around at replacements.

Thx for the feedback it is appreciated. I'll check out Synology in the first instance and then look at QNAP.

Synology NAS here.

Use it as a backup for work documents and photos. Also have installed a Plex media server, usenet download client, CCTV surveillance system.

All files are automatically backed up online through Backblaze for around £6/month. The only thing not backed up is my movie library for cost reasons but then I don’t need 40TB of cloud backups :p

If you can use a PC you can figure it out.

Thread resurrection.

I haven't been using my NAS much for the last year and have a load of stuff that I need to back up. Unbeknownst to me a change on Window 10 (probably some long overdue update) has removed the network connectivity for my ReadyNAS Duo shares. I've updated all the firmware and such like but no good. So even more so it feels like a good time to upgrade my NAS.

Stupid question here given that my PC won't connect to my ReadyNAS shares how do I move the data from my current RAID to a new NAS. Can I just plug one of the hard drives from the NAS into my PC?

It'll probably be an SMB issue.

You either need to reenable the older version of SMB (disabled because it isn't secure) or see if the ReadyNAS can enable a more recent version.

Google 'readynas smb' and you should find some information on the issue.

@bremen1874 Thx for the reply.

Yeah it is an SMB issue, my ReadyNas won't support SMB2 and my general thinking was rather than muck about with an old model that I've never really got to grips with update the problem away and see if I can do a better job next time around.

You wanted to get the data off the existing NAS. The easiest option is to get Windows and the NAS talking again which you can do by fixing the SMB issue on one of them. If you temporarily reenable SMB1 on the Windows 10 machine you should be able to get at the data.
