So having gotten bored of Skyrim, burnt out on D3, and tired of MMORPG's (TESO, WoW, Rift, LOTRO etc) i am now looking for an engaging rpg to spend hours on while i recharge my gaming batteries.
Any recommendations? anything come along recently i may have missed thats worth playing? to give an idea of what type of rpg's i like, Baldurs Gate / Icewind Dale / Neverwinter series are my favourites, Diablo series, Dragon Age series etc.
Suggestions?
I first played Gothic around 15 years ago and have never been so hooked and immersed in a game world ever since. That lead me to believe that I was an RPG fan, which lead me to force play many of the games that you and others have mentioned, only to find that they bored the hell out of me.
On the boring list:
Skyrim
Oblivion
Fallout
Dragon Age
Mass Effect
Amalur
and probably a few more that I have (instantly) forgotten. I state that just so you know where I am coming from. Perhaps I have a more 'offbeat' taste in RPGs which you will not share.
So onto the recommended list:
Divinity Dragon Saga
Witcher (1+2)
Risen (1+2) (Risen 3, I aint played yet)
And that is pretty much it in terms of relatively recent games.
For me, the best all time RPG was Gothic 2, but that would entail a trip back to DX8 (the game still looks stunning imo) and the need for a widescreen fix. Or more recently, there was Gothic 3, which was a complete train wreck of a game upon release, but with the CP 1.75 patch (with alternate combat/balancing activated) plus a content mod 2.4 (I think), I found it to be a truly epic experience. To get an idea of (a fully patched up) Gothic 3, think of a RPG world on a Skyrim scale, but instead of the vast expanses of forest, plains and mountains serving mainly as an attractive yet essentially empty and pointless time/space barrier between a bazillion cordoned off generic dungeons, or towns where the mechanics/rules of the game totally change, the landscape in Gothic 3 is teaming with life, danger, booty (that you will actually care about), secrets, and is where the all the action takes place, with the dungeons which you may find being auxilliary to the game play, as opposed to the focus of it. The large human settlement areas in Gothic 3 also blend in seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.
So if you were looking for something 'epic' which you probably haven't tried yet, I would recommend Gothic 3, BUT, I cannot stress enough this recomendation only applies to the fully patched up version of the game. The game was a train wreck upon release and was soon abandoned by the devs due to disputes with the publisher.....
Other than that, there is Gothic 1.....but I would imagine that this would offer way too low a graphical experience for anyone used to modern standards to be able to get properly into it.
