Right well the story goes as;

I have a laptop at the moment, which is a bit old now.

Its a HP Omnibook 6100.. 1.0Gig CPU, 512mb Ram, 40GB Harddrive and weighs a tonne.

So im wanting a new laptop for 6th form and general use between £600-900 .. obviously cheaper the better. It'll be used atleast 10hours a week, as thats how many lessons i have at school for ICT. So battery life needs to be quite long.

Also, needs to be fairly powerful, and have atleast 80-100GB HardDrive for music, work etc.

I want the laptop to be as small as possible, but 15.4" is fine. Also, as light as possible.

Any ideas?

I've thought about a MacBook but i decided i just wouldnt use the facilities it offers. So ive had a look at some of the Sony Vaio's but im just not sure about laptops nowadays.

Another point, it might be used for graphic design, and the odd game but nothing extreme.

Thanks for any input lads.

Check out some of the Acers they are built well and you get a lot for your money with them. I own the TravelMate 8100 its quite old now (over a yr) but I love it, have had no probs with it what so ever.

Is it light and fairly small?

Will have a quick look.

Cheers

Its not that small really, u can get smaller.

Im abit out of touch with laptop CPUs and graphics, but you will prob have to strike a balance between performance and battery life. Pentium M processors offer good performance and dont suck too much juice, but there mite be better CPUs out now that offer better performance and along with battery life.. im sure someone here will help point u in the right direction :)

Just had a look at the 8100 - its around £1200+

Anyone else got something similar to what i need?

Look at Centrino, perhaps Acer 16xx range? (164x and 169x)
Sony are overpriced.

Acer Aspire 1642ZWLMi
Intel Centrino, Pentium M 735A 1.7GHz Processor
1024MB DDR II RAM
80GB Hard Drive
DVD-Dual double layer
15.4" WXGA CrystalBrite Widescreen TFT display
Intel® 915GM integrated 3D graphics 128 MB of shared memory
10/100 Fast Ethernet & 802.11b/g Wireless LAN
Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition
£ 528.75 inc VAT
Battery 2 hour(s) pretty naff here

Problem if you want gaming is that battery life is reduced.

Yeah, im wanting the battery to last as long as possible, preferably more than 2 hours. The weight is another thing that i need it to have. I can probably spend upto £800-850 if needed too.

Acer range is just too big...I suggest google searching, there are two large Acer retailers, go through each model finding one with longer run times.

It does look like the "Travelmate" range have longer run times, most likely because these are aimed at the business market.

{from review
"In real world testing I managed to get almost four hours from the battery while surfing and writing an article. I simply let the Acer power utility choose the power profile for me and the results were quite good. This result was a big surprise to me. Imagine how long a bigger battery would last.

I must mention the power supply unit that comes with the TM2428. It is tiny! This is great when compared to the monster power supplies that come with some notebooks. An added benefit is that it never gets terribly hot."

That laptop is amazing value. Now there is a change of mind too.

My dads decided he wants to buy a smaller laptop than what he has now, and decided to give me the chance of whether i want his Sony Vaio.

The specs are:

15.4" Widescreen
1.73Ghz Processor
1024mb RAM
Nvidea Go 6400 256mb Gfx card (i think)
80GB HD
2.9kg

But now, after this, my dad now wants a smaller laptop for upto £400-500.

He's not bothered by it being too powerful, just smaller than his current one. He wants around 11-14.1" screen, and atleast 1.5ghz Processor. Another thing, he wants S-Video Out but is not overly bothered if not.

Any ideas?

Sorry for the change.

Dual Layer Multi DVD+/-R+/-RW Drive
