Due to motor being under warrenty i dont want to start messing about with subs etc, but i would like to improve the 16.5cms speakers in the door. Anyone recommend a good sounding set preferably with a bit of a 'thump' behind them.

Its a CD400 in a Vauxhall Insignia. I dont really want to change anything obvious due to warrenty etc.

Listen to anything except rap.

I've just set a Focal 165 CA1's in the front of the Evo. They are still in the "burn in" phase but I but they aren't very bassy at the moment and I doubt the will be to be honest so probably one to avoid for you. Great clarity of the mids and highs though.

Almost like my mordaunt short speakers but in the car.

Focals are almost glassy in sound. I've always preferred Pioneer component kits, but it you aren't adding a sub, maybe Alpine would be a better bet? Try www.caraudiodirect.com.

You will also need speaker adapters too as common speakers are either 17cm (6.5inch) or 16cm (6 inch)

I rate CDT CL-6EX as a decent seaker, but anything you buy around the £100 mark would most likely need an amp to drive it properly.

But be prepared for a lot of people there to tell you that unless you're going to spend £2000 on an amplifier, acoustic matting, etc. etc. that it's not worth bothering at all.

Ha I noticed that when I was on there.

It's pretty much like with anything. People get "enthusiast" syndrome. I do it myself, with computer components, car parts, basically any stuff I use.

"Oooooooh, personally I wouldn't use anything other than an Enermax power supply"

"It's a budget system for my 4 year old son"

"Oh"

People on there have difficulty realising that many of us don't want reference quality sound in the car, just better quality than the paper speaker garbage you get with a lot of OEM.

I can't see that changing the head unit would affect warranty any more than changing the speakers would. The reason I suggested looking at the hu, is, if it's not very powerfull, a decent after market one will have better Internal amp, and will drive the speakers better.

But it depends which is the weaker link, the factory stereo, or the speakers.
If the stereo is weak, then a speaker upgrade won't do much for you, unless you use an external amp.

Yeah but if we are buying 120-150 quid components you're just not gonna get the best from them. Granted there may be an improvement but probably a loss in midbass over OEM in a lot of cases, they seem to bloat the sound on OEM speakers/HU's.

Where as I have some MTX ones cost me 35 quid brand new and they sing ok off head unit power but you can tell they're itching to be amped. I did get them incredibly cheap though lol.
