Hey guys, I'm not a laptop type of guy so really looking for advice on the current market.

So we are looking to buy my girlfriends mum a new laptop. Her current laptop is really old, takes more than 10 minutes to even start up and it would literally drive me insane if it was mine.

It doesn't need to be fancy. All she does it store images, uses Skype and browse the internet. Price wise, the cheaper the better but would be preferable to keep it under £200. I'm sure that anything I buy at this stage is 10x faster and better than what she currently uses.

Look for business refurbs on fleabay. You should be able to get a i5 or i7 2nd or third gen processor, small SSD say 120GB, and 8GB Ram for £200 or less. They are Lenovo Thinkpads and Dell.

What make/model is her current laptop? The spec would help if you know (CPU, RAM & type, hard drive etc)

If it's not too old, you could just buy an SSD and replace the HDD, plus possible RAM upgrade? Save you a chunk of money.

The laptop seems to be http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/laptops/48130/fujitsu-siemens-esprimo-mobile-v5535-review and it's running Windows Vista.

Just loaded the laptop up and it's got;
Windows Vista 32Bit
Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 570 @ 2.26GHz
2GB ram
And seems to contain just a normal 150GB hard drive.
Oh and it will only work when it's plugged in.

EDIT: trying to uninstall a bunch of rubbish. Currently trying to get rid of iTunes as it's never actually used. Been at this for probably an hour now and it's very close to finishing the "Gathering required information..." it's working but very slowly.

That spec is about the age of the first generation i5s and i7s, which would be ok, but being a Celeron with 2GB RAM I would not bother spending any money on it personally. You could buy her a Lenovo/DELL/HP from the bay for around £200 or less as already suggested and put an SSD in it, or a new one can be found for around the same amount, may be a bit slower overall though.

Yeah that thing is too old old, not worth spending money on to upgrade. You'd have to upgrade the RAM, hard drive and replace battery... Then you still have the low spec CPU, bulky laptop and low resolution screen.

I would just do as mentioned, find a cheap one off the bay, whack an SSD in it and job done.
