Ive had more rows pre UK PS3 release with some of the fanboys on here over the exact problems mentioned all the time regarding the PS3, its sales and the desire to actually own it for its gaming entertainment value is currently lacking for many. It hasnt been the massive success Sony dreamed of but the price isnt even the main problem ive said it for almost a year, that without killer App games it was going to struggle. The question is why, why have Sony NOT got killer app titles?
One thing people keep forgetting with the PS3 is that its not just a console its a completely new format. Blu Ray has given a lot of headaches for Sony which may of hampered/delayed game development. However as a whole its more important than just the games division early success.
Ive always held this view and for Sony, Blu Rays success as a format must be quickly achieved. Sony really need the PS3 to sell as its Blu Rays biggest hope. In fairness i think they have achieved a now established format, with so many backing partners and a now growing catalouge of films. The formats safe and if anything is now looking to be the best format for movies.
Thats one reason the PS3 is a brill multipurpose machine and indeed a nice movie player. Its not got a chance as being the best choice if your after entertainment in games, Microsofts catalouge is so vast and price point is always going to undercut the PS3. Ahh but its choice and Sony will always offer something different so casual gamers/movie fans wont be hit as hard as
the typical PS2 nut.
Depends where your interests are how suitable it is to you......
As a multimedia entertainment box...
I look upon the PS3 more as a possible HTPC that will have good games eventually coming. For what it does it is indeed a bargin. If anything its more of an interesting purchase to tech savvy folk and movie lovers than it is for gamers.
As a console...
Bad management, poor games catalouge, virtually no Killer App and a major lack of popular exclusives available. Combined with online gaming thats lacking compared to the competition.
Still within a year this will be a lot different.
