Ok this is the situation. I have the spec in the sig. About 3 weeks ago my internet stopped working. I am on uni bband and it works through the network via a network cable. I had been overclocking and i thought my high fsb might have damaged the onboard lan or mashed the mac address. Or the internet had a problem there end.

But the internet works fine, i checked with a lappy. I was going to buy a network card and thought that would probibly fix what ever has happened.

But now at home, i connected the tiscali bband up vie the usb modem and that doesnt work either. It gives me a connection, and even an ip addy but wont open a page, or allow any data travel.

So what do i do now? What gone wrong!?

I need the internet working for monday night desperatly. Can anyone help?

System restore wont go back far enough and i have tried disabling all firewalls ect.

Any other ideas?

I really really cant afford to be reinstalling windows!

Was it set up to go through a proxy server?
Try disabling this in internet exploer options/connections/lan settings.

No, not that i know of. And my home one wasnt definatly, and the home one works through usb as i said.

Any other ideas?

Open Network connections and delete the connections you have setup and reboot, sometimes (god knows why) all the settings etc get changed somehow and the best and quickest way is to delete completely and reinstall, this normally solves the problems i've come across.

Make sure it's set to get an IP automatically rather than a manually entered one. Also, have a look in the advanced section of the Windows firewall - there are settings in there can sometimes mess things up even when Windows says the firewall is off - that caught me out once.

Monstermunch...Tried that and it didnt help.

Curio...Ip is set to automatic and firewall settings are all correct.

Any other ideas? See this is why i am stuck. I thought of all the obvious things but none of them have helped, so now im out of ideas.

try this :

start --> control panel --> network connections --> create new connection.

create a dial up connection as you would for a dial up connection, but put for the phone number 0,38

Also try the test login details to see if you can access the net at all :

user : [email protected]
pass : testing

these test details will let you connect only to the website : http://www.dslconnect.co.uk and nothing else.

Also see if you can access the speedtouch modem page at all, should be ip address 10.0.0.138, if not then go start --> run --> cmd

then input ipconfig, and the default gateway is the address uses for your connection device, typically router.

If you got the speedtouch 330 make sure both the lights are solid, if one is flashing you got a sync issue and this could mean either tiscali got a prob on their lines or it's not connected to the phone right. Should go filter --> phone line --> modem --> comp.

just some stuff to chew on :)

You could try uninstalling your network device through Device Manager, reset and when it boots back up let Windows install it again. See fit that helps? The network device is onboard isnt it? Try looking on the motherboards website for driver updates for it?

I will give this all a go in a bit but im sure it wont solve the problem as the problem is not just with my modem, its more than that.

i had a similar problem a while ago, and the broadband company told me to restart my machine in "safe mode with networking", i tried this, and thorugh this mode i could access the net.

After that for some weird reason it just started working in normal windows mode.

But safe mode is a good way, as it will only load the minimal stuff.

Check the back of your pc make sure there are leds flashing on the network port if not then it could be cable or a problem further up the line.

If its with a university speak to the network administrators, the libary helpdesk will be able to point you in the right direction.

Most Uni's use a proxy server as it allows there networks to be much more secure.

But there will be help from your uni which will be much more useful as they will have experience with there network.

You were overclocking when it started happening? I had the same problem - onboard usb and lan stopped working when I installed my crucial ballistix on my MSI board. I changed the voltage setting from auto to ballistix stock of 2.8v and the problem was solved.
Failing that I'd try the MSI forums mate. http://forum.msi.com.tw

warnea1984, i get problems through the usb connection at home to though?

Meds, i will try that.

Trojan698... I took the fsb to 292 and it wouldnt let me boot up so i had to clear the bios. At first i thought id damaged the lan but the chances of damaging lan and usb is slim. Especially when my usb printer works and even the modem does, the pc just doesnt seen to allow any data through once connected.

there is a patch to set the windows TCP/IP and other networking related files to their defaults, that may well help.

I'll move this to IC&N

Check the contents of your hosts file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Open it in notepad, the only entries should be a load of text with comment lines and:

Localhost 127.0.0.1

:)
