Need desperate help with V5

I have asked about this before but I can't find the post now.

It's getting pretty desperate now. We purchased a car in March from a home dealer. All was good and we got thee new keepers and he said he would fill in the online documents to get the new V5 out to us. Months went on with no luck due to Covid 19. I asked on here and was told to fill out the form to say I didn't get my v5 and with that you have to send in your new keepers supplement. It's now been two months and still nothing. It's impossible to speak to someone at DVLA, they claim due to Covid 19 there are no staff. I have sent through an email with a request saying I am a key worker as they say they will process their requests.

I received an email saying that they aren't processing paper applications and that they can't go and look for it even as a key worker.

I should be leaving for Canada soon for at least two years and I'm not going to be able to take or store the car. There is no sign of when the DVLA will be back in the office. Online it states the last v5 was issued in 2014 so it definitely hasn't just been lost in the post and it's definitely not in my name.

What do I do in this situation? The car isn't even in the dealers name, it's in the name of the lady who owned it before. I dont have the new keepers slip as I sent it out to the DVLA. I have no proof so who would buy it?

This is causing so much stress. Is my insurance even valid as I said the car is in my name? I have paid for tax yet it says you can only get a refund if the car is in your name. I do t understand how pubs, gyms and everything else is back to normal yet DVLA staff are still off as if it's the height of Covid19

I was wondering this. I managed to get hold of someone at DVLA. They informed me that they can't help as they never received the change of ownership supposedly. They say that it has been marked and transferred into the trade but nothing after that. We bought it from a dealer who said he had transferred it online. I dont have a copy of the v5 or new keepers. I do have the last part that has the document reference number so it seems I can pretend to be the current owner and try and transfer it again. I just fear this might cause issues as the current owner would have had to go online to say they have transferred it into the trade so it might be strange that they are suddenly selling to a private person. Also the trader was a home trader and is not replying to us. We bought it in London and I'm currently living in Aberdeen.

Most likely scenario is trader hasn't actually done it, or may have lost the V5C and is ************ you.

You need to fill out and return a V62. It'll take weeks most likely so the sooner you get this done the better.

I have completed and returned a v62 with my new keepers supplement two months ago. On the DVLA website it claims they aren't even processing paper applications due to the virus. I can imagine when they actually do start the backlog will be insane and take months. So I'm looking at a time of after Christmas in my opinion if I'm lucky. I need to sell the car by the latest a month.

The online system is so good and the 3 or 4 times I've used it, the new V5C has arrived within a few days and it's been completely painless. I'd say the trader has forgotten to do it.

If i were you, i'd just do it online and register the car to yourself. You own the vehicle, so there's no question about that, but you are simply updating DVLA databases to show you are the registered keeper of the vehicle.

But can I do that as a private person even though it's showing in the dvlas database that it's been transferred into the trade. Doesn't it mean the transfer should be done by a person in the trade to me? If I complete it online I have to do it as if it's a private trade

I don't understand this part. As far as the last private owner knows, they have successfully transferred the RK to trade - hence why it is now labelled as "in trade". Why would they hear about who the person in the trade sold it to? They've already sold it to the person in the trade so that deal has been done - you're buying it from the person in the trade.

What I mean is how do I pretend to transfer it online as it will show it's coming from the previous owner which isn't right as it's registered in the trade. Surely it has to then be sold out of the trade?

Have you been on the website? It's very, very straightforward.

You literally tick the box saying "i'm a trader", then you tick the next box saying "I have sold a vehicle to someone not in the trade" (ie. you!). Then it asks for the trader's name and their postcode, then search. Then you find the trader's trade name and click on it. Then you type in the VRM of the car and the V5C log book reference number, then you tick the box saying "i've sold it to a private individual" as opposed to a business.

I did go through that process. I don't have the traders name. His name on Facebook was different to the name he signed our purchase receipt with. Neither are associated with that postcode which is his home address. He might have a business name and address I don't know about.

Dealer may never had the V5 in the first place !

Dealer has not done anything about it, cant you contact the dealer and ask for the V5c ?

I did complete the v5 with the dealer so he did have it. I have asked him for it and tried calling but he won't answer texts or calls.

The seller wasn't any help. Managed to track down his address but the only company registered there is a building company. I have completed the online change using those details so fingers crossed it works. Such a stressful situation.

Another update. Online it is saying that a new V5 has been issued. I know it wasn't the most honest way to do it but at least the results were instant compared to all the hassle I've had trying to go about it the right way. Thanks again for the help all

V5 arrived today. I feel it was the seller that messed this all up. I doubt he even applied for it as when I did it in his name I was sent a confirmation email to both the buyer and seller. The process has actually been brilliant.

When buying it I did mention that at the time before Covid got so bad we were only going to have the car for a couple of months so just wanted something reliable and cheap. He said he would buy it back after two months if we didn't sell it to someone else. I wonder if he was hoping I would struggle to sell without the v5 so would sell it to him for cheap and it would still only show as 1 previous owner
