ok, i just order the follwing from here on friday, and was assured its all compaible (have removed software/peripherals from the list), so im ticking that off the list that could be wrong;

OcUK Value Hanns-G HW191D 19" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Silver (MO-017-OK)
Antec Sonata II Piano Black Quiet Case - 450W Smart Power PSU (CA-040-AN)
Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail (CP-128-IN)
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC) (MY-058-GL)
Asus P5W DH Deluxe WiFi (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-152-AS)
Connect3D ATI Radeon X1900 XT 256MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-053-CO)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 200GB ST3200820AS SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (HD-085-SE)
NEC AD5170 18x18 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM (CD-041-NE)

ok, so, i've built a PC once before, but it was based on one of those bare-bones systems, where mobo and stuff is included. It also had a bloody good set of instructions >_>

this time having a mix of everything seems to half left me in the **** so to speak >_>

i've put it all together (as i best i can :S have had many (un)educated guesses), and now problems are

a) on the monitor i get 'no signal' message

im assuming its due to everything not being plugged together properly, but also related: the monitor to PC cord is male @ both ends, the monitor socket is female, but theres no compatible socket on the PC. There is, on the graphics card (is it dvdi?) slots (2), and with the card came two adapters to slot into dvdi sockets (though it seems one is busted, and wont fit - can i pick these up seperately?)

b) the CD drive has no power

c) the inbuilt fan, and processor fan do not turn on (though the one on the graphics card does)

d) theres unused wires everywhere :(

heres some pics:

No signal means either you havnt connected the extra power to the gfx or missed the 12v+ on the motherboard its a 4 pin socket (2x2) normally not far from the cpu

b) the CD drive has no power

try another power connector from another row and check its connected to the PSU propperly as its a modular one..

c) the inbuilt fan, and processor fan do not turn on (though the one on the graphics card does)

See answer a

theres unused wires everywhere :(

These are called spare

When I have got no signal messages in the past it was resolution related. If the power connectors are not connected to the graphics card it will tell you that when you switch it on.

thanks for the help;

yeah - there was a spare 2*2, and an empty slot near the processor - il sort that out

as for the loose drives, il put em inside once everything's working, just hassle taking them in and out for now

whats molex? :S

and on the monitor issue; as i said, i have what appear to be 2 adaptors to allow the monitor to plug into dvi(?) slots, though one appears to be broke :S would it be ok to connect the monitor to the graphics card via the dvi adaptor, but plug it into the standard slot on the monitor

(cant remember the exact number of holes, but hopefully you get the drift)

and lastly, i remember last time i built a PC, on the back of the hard disk, and dvd drive, were 3*2 pin slots, with a connector covering two pins, and i had to change its position. Do i need to do this again? (neither came packaged of with manual/instructions even though they were bought new :S)

thanks again in advance - won't actually be able to test any of this till im home from work, about 6 ish

I am assuming that these are the jumpers for master and slave that you are referring to. Yes these will have to be set and look on the HDD and dvd and there should be some picture to tell you which is master. I assume the DVD is IDE and HDD Sata then both wil be master, if they were both on the same channel one would be master and the other slave. Remeber to check configuration in BIOS when you get it to boot.

Thanks for the help guys, and sorry for the continuous bumping, but if someone could reply to the following;

Belkin Pro Series Dual Link DVI Cable 3M (F2E4141EA10-DD) (CB-127-BE)
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Video_Cables.html

i'd like to do it asap

CD-ROM needs molex.

can anyone expand on this? :S

And lastly, as you can see in the first pic:

http://i13.tinypic.com/330vl7m.jpg

coming from the fan, there are two leads - one with a switch, and the other looks like a power lead. As i said, the fan wasnt working - is there anywhere what i assume to be the power-lead should be going?

Again, thanks in advance - much <3 to the great community here

lol do you think the fan works just sitting there unplugged?
That white 4 pin plug is a molex, plug it into the PSU cables. The CD-ROM needs a molex too.

Might sound stupid, but dont forget theres a switch on the back of the psu.

lol, i got that far :P

if you check pic.s 2/3/4, u can see the rear of the Hard drive (2/3) and DVD drive (4)

is that not the power supply there already (right of the pic on the CD-drive)

Im talking about a switch just under where u plug the mains power cable into the psu at the back of the case.

Nice socks!

Please do not rest hardware on carpet as the static can kill some of your hardware.

Always ground yourself by touching the metal bit of your case before u dive in fiddling with bits!

Just letting you know :)!

ok, plugged in the fan, and attatched the power cable (2*2) to the MB, everything was working fine.

tried installing windows, every few minutes the computer turns itself off, on my best try i get to formatting the HD / changing to NTSC (or w/e) @ 5%

notice theres a spare fan to use if you are using a core 2 duo or similar processor, add it, and get further into the format, but it turns off again.

(this is between tries of the computer not even starting up).

so, the fan on the case is working, extra fan is working, hard drive is working, DVD drive is working, then i realise the fan on top of the CPU isn't spinning, and sure enough, on the hardware check thingy at the start, it mentioned that as a fault (before turning off again >_>)

so, any ideas as to why the fan on top of my CPU isn't spinning?

(and also, since formatting to 15% or so on my best try, when i try and restart the process, and my comp is on long enough to get to it, i get the message 'operating system not found' before i can start the windows installation/hard disk format - any idea how i can start the entire installation from scratch? :S)

ofc the fan thing is more important - id really like to have this working tonight

Thanks again in advance - awesome people here

i have the CPU fan plugged into the correct socket, yes

In the bios, turn off the smart fan option

i've been looking and can't find it

could you point out where that option is please :S

i did see my CPU is at approx 80 degrees iirc

thats pretty hot isn't it?
