need films and the like on my iPad - how.

Guys, help a fella out!

I am off on holiday next week and i can not remember the best way i to load movies and tv shows onto my iPhone / iPad

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

What is the best file format? Xvid? divx? MKV? MPEG4?
What is the software i need to get them re-coded, if needed.
What do i need to recode too?

I need the idiots guide please!

Ill be using my PC, win 7, i do have a Mac Book Pro that i can use i suppose, but i only use this on Windows 7 too, plus its on the Bay at the mo so id rather not use it.

I cant seem to find VLC in the appstore, only VLC Streamer.

I am using Handbrake now, what are the best settings for me to choose?
I have the preset ipad settings selected but i only have a 16gb iPad and i want to get the most on here as i can, so... i would like to have the smallest file sizes possible whilst maintaining a decent quailty (if poss)
