Hi all,

I've been out of the hardware loop for a while so could do with some advice with building a new gaming pc.

I've got a Corsair 620W PSU, ATI 4990 and case which i will reuse. I will need CPU, motherboard, memory, CPU cooler, two HDs (one for OS to sit on).

Ill be using it primarily for gaming. Budget wise i can go up to £800, but the lower the better. i don't intend to overclock initially either.

Thanks in advance :)

Sorry i meant 4890 :)

What's the difference (other than price!) between the i5 and i7?

Thanks

The i7 2600K has,

Hyperthreading.
100MHz more core speed.
2mb more L3 cache

For gaming these have little effect for the extra cost - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/287?vs=288

What's a good air cooler for these Intel CPUs?

The stock intel item is good for 4Ghz± a bit.

£23 gets you a Coolermaster Hyper 212+
£25 gets a Gelid Tranquillo or Corsair A50

Those will do a solid 4.5GHZ± a bit

Check the room your case has from the cpu socket to the side panel to make sure it will close.

Looks like the Crucial M4 SSD has gone from in-stock to pre-order after my order was placed. Was abroad so I wasn't able to respond to the webnote in time for it to be delivered on Monday when I'll be a home :(

What would be a suitable replacement for the M4?

I've had to revise my budget to £800. The Vertex3 120GB is a little too much for me.

Would a 64GB version be too small for just the OS? I've got a separate 1TB drive for everything else.

64GB will hold the OS and about 4-5games.

Its the size I currently have and I find it manageable.
