Need HDMI sound output, or do I?

I have an Onkyo NR616 amp, and unfortunately it doesn't seem to support optical sound. I've always used HDMI from my graphics card to play music through my amp and speakers however that graphics card has died a death and the replacement only has DVI and no HDMI ports.

Therefore, what do I need? I saw there's a HDMI sound card but they are mad money. Could I just plug a few cables from the onboard soundcard into the back of my amp, and if so, what cables do I require?

I'm hopeless when it comes to audio. (You could say I'm lossless...ahem)

Thanks!

No HDMI on motherboard, it's kind of old technology I'm playing with here.

I read on a forum it doesn't support it. Anyway, I went to Tesco and bought a jack to phono lead. Put the jack into the lime green port on my onboard sonudcard and put the two other ends (red and white) into PC in at the back of the amp, as shown on the picture below. But still no sound!?!? I've played around in the settings, assigned PC to Coaxial but nothing. It definitely worked fine with HDMI.

Argh!
