my girlfriend wnts to be a actress but she is having a very had time finding anything that helps her towards doing this.

She has just finished a 2 year course at college for performing arts and she was going to go to chichester university but in the last few weeks she is having second thoughts as the course is not what she wants at all as its more towards theatre work rather then films.

We have decided pretty much that she is going to take a gap year from university and next year try for guildhall in london, although this comes with many problems such as the cost (£15,000 per year AFAIK) and lots of competition.

Thing is if she takes a gap year although she will be much happier being a year behind on what she could be if it means she can get into the course she wants, she or we should i say, dont want her to just do nothing, she has to do some other work in the mean time such as evenign classes once a week or something.

Bascially what im wanting to find out is whether anyone knows of any good places to look online for courses for acting for a year?

Also looking for advice on what you think is a good idea for her to do in her gap year?

ideally she would want to go to USA to do a course there but what we are worreid about is cost of uni, and cost of living as i know USA have weird rules and its hard to get jobs and to even live out there if you dpnt have family out there that are immediate. Can anyone who is experienced with this sort of thing give us some advice on how to move to america, things we need to know, look into, and aswell about scholarships, how to apply, what sort of things we'd need to look into for that

Also finally i think this was the last thing, we are looking into getting agents but again having not one bit of luck as they all say no professinal training like uni. thing is some of her friends from college have managed to get agents with the same training so we dont know where we are going wrong. Can anyone advise on what we can do?

Sorry for the unorganised thread, too much to say. Also i know this is compltely not the place to post these questions but we don't know anywhere to go. We have also posted in Studentroom, does anyone know of any good forums, sites that can give good advise for wannabe actors/actresses.

Thanks all, hope to get some good avice out of you all.

http://www.rada.org/

might be a good place to start. they offer courses, workshops (one or two day courses etc)...probably one of the best academies in the country. You can also sign up for newsletters where they invite you to events etc.

She should speak to a uni/careers advisor..she can tell them exactly what she wants and they should be able to suggest a few things for her.

Also, getting involved at theatres would be another good place to start. They often have drama groups which may open a few doors for her.

it's not going to be cheap or easy (so much competition out there) but if it's her dream then she should follow it. ;)

Does she read The Stage or look at Spotlight.

IME the only way she's going to get work is if she's already had some. It's a vicious circle and she needs to start building up her practical portfolio as well as her quallies - even if it's crappy pantomimes and stuff because that is where she'll get noticed, not in a classroom. After all, who wants an actress with qualifications up to the eyeballs but no actual experience? She needs both. Once she's done some practical she should find the agent hunting a lot easier.

Bummer :( Maybe next time she should recruit a local photographer. There's plenty on here that would probably help out taking photos of a pretty girl for a low price :D
