Hi im upgrading my PC as I am doing an animation degree so I need a faster system for 3d modeling, video editing, rendering etc.
heres the things im going to get

q6600 go stepping
4gig ram
motherboard ?
PSU ?
large harddisk
video card (maybe)

Im willing to spend £500 on the system but I was wondering if you guys could help in regards to what motherboard, PSU etc to get. Its been a few years since I built a pc so thats why im not sure about the motherboard to get, I know its socket LGA755 but as to what make of motherboard -no idea.

I'll need to sell my current pc
3200+ AMD Athalon 64 XP
1 gig DDR
Asus s939 (sorry cant remember the exact one)
ATI X850X with arctic cooler

Im not sure about the video card as I would like to get a DX10 one but im not sure If I should wait a while - let me know what you all think.

cheers
Steve

£500 is a bit slim if you want a decent graphics card, a Q6600, 4 GiB RAM, and a large hard disk (or more). I'll give it a go anyway and see how well I can get it.

It's way overbudget but it gives you an idea what you can get. The X1950 Pro is a pretty good card and would be a significant step-up from your X850. The motherboard there is a great choice since it overclocks well, and is quite future-proof with support for DDR2 and DDR3. Bear in mind you'll need to use a 64-bit OS with this combination.

If anyone can suggest a good video card at a resonable price I may be able to stretch...............maybe. But the card I have just now is ok the only thing that lets it down is that it doesnt support PS 3.0.
But it would be nice to have a DX10 card for crysis.

Wow cheers man that was quick. Thats really cool of you to do that for me. You have totally put me in the right direction, now all I need to do is sleuth the internet for good deals. but saying that they'r not too bad.
What site did you use to find them.
But again thanks for the help.

cheers

Same spec as Billy but replace the X1900 with a 2600XT!

I use Autodesk 3DS with a 2600XT and it renders fantastic results :)

The system from Billy is good, the site that the deals come from is the shop that pays for these forums. The rules prohibit the recommendation of other suppliers anyway. :)

Ooooooooh the Blasphemy!!!!

Wish now that I had hit send on my post instead of running off to make a cup of tea first.

Hi why do you think I should choose the 2600XT over the X1950 I looked at a compare performance site and its shows X1950 with a much better overall score. Can anyone confirm which is better.

cheers
steve

Just checked the 2600XT has DX10 but the X1950 doesnt (I think thats right) but am I better off waiting till next year to get a DX10 card as the 2600XT is in the price range but will it be able to run DX10 games well.

Aye X1900 series is better for DX9 than the 2600 and DX10 is upcoming and not really here just yet so you are better to wait on what you have got as long as your gaming is looking good and still enjoyable.

On what DX10 titles are out the X2600 handles them ok but from recent reviews ATI aren't doing too well in the DX10 driver department but that will get sorted out. It's just that after Christmas there will new cards I reckon (about February time). These cards should be a lot better at running DX10 and will knock current hardware pricing down :).

If you had a X1600 or 7600GT I'd recommend you'd upgrade for waiting but the x1800/x1900/7800/7900 is still fine I think.

He hinted at gaming at the top.
