Need Help - Buying a new GPU

Hi all,

My 4GB 680GTX is on it's way out. It's crashing on many GPU intensive games with temps going through the roof. I took apart the GPU and cleaned it which helped temps but still the crashes remain. I downloaded Palit's ThunderMaster program to change the fan curve manually and still it continues to crash. Games such as BF4, Rome 2 and Farcry 4 - which I used to be able to play at certain settings are now crashing after several minutes of gameplay. GPU-Z says temps are through the roof.

A fresh windows install and deleting and reinstalling drivers didn't help. So I think it might be time to start saving for a new GPU as this one is outside of warranty. It's a kick in the teeth as this is the most expensive GPU I bought and it's the only one to have failed.

I really need advice on a cost effective GPU to replace a 4GB 680 GTX. Currently out of work so it's going to take some time to save and so I really need bang for buck here. My monitor is 2560 x 1600 and it's GPU hungry. I also enjoy having all my games on ultra settings (except AA settings).

I can play older games to my hearts content on my PC, but any newer titles cause this consistent crashing.

I don't mind Nvidia or AMD - I just need a good GPU that doesn't like to cook itself under load. Also i'd like a 3+ year warranty - so perhaps Zotac brand?

Hello, do you have a budget at all in mind for a new GPU?

can either get a GTX 980 or a 290X but the GPU would depend on how much you want to spend on a card.

970s are for 1080p and would need to lower settings down to game over that res

Would say 970 but that memory and bus width is a bit hit and miss, especially with higher resolutions like 1600p.

Right now I would say a Radeon 290 would be your best bang for buck. You can get one under £240 and OCuK even have the PowerColor one on order next week for £200.

If you're going to be taking some time to save then keep in mind there are new cards due around June so that could lower the prices of current cards possibly.

Thanks for the replies. In all honesty I wish I knew my budget. It'll probably be 400 or so. But wouldn't be until June or July until I could get it anyway. I'm just hoping my GPU lasts that long. If a new series comes out in summer then I'll certainly look out for what they're capable of at higher resolutions in benchmarks.

The R9 300 series should be out by then and maybe Nvidia might introduce some newer cards too.
